No. 7 Cal State Stanislaus Takes Two More From CSUDH Softball Team

April 21, 2007

Game 1    Game 2

Turlock, CA -- Stinging from 10 errors made in yesterday's double-header loss, Cal State Dominguez Hills shored up its defense with just one miscue Saturday afternoon at No. 7-ranked Cal State Stanislaus, but still suffered 4-2 and 11-7 defeats at the hands of the NCAA Far West's top seed. Having lost six in a row after these two contests, CSUDH falls to 21-27, 9-19 CCAA.

In the opener, CSUDH managed just five hits against the pitching of CSUS ace Jessica Gaumnitz, while the Warriors tagged the Toros for single runs in the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th frames to take the eventual 4-2 win. Bri Mahr (Fullerton, CA/Cypress JC) got the Toros on the board with a solo blast in the 4th, and a wild pitch allowed Jamie Portillo (La Habra, CA/St. Paul HS) to scamper home with CSUDH's second run in the 6th.

The Toros had a golden opportunity to knot the game in that same frame by loading the bases with two out, but CSUS relief pitcher Nikki DeLeon retired Akemi Fleming (Long Beach, CA/Millikan HS) on a pop out to short to end the threat.

Things started well in the nightcap as CSUDH posted 5 runs on 5 hits in the 1st inning, using a Mahr 2RBI single and a Katie Garcia (Riverside, CA/La Sierra HS) 2RBI double as its big blows. After CSUS answered with a run in its 1st-inning at-bat and the two teams exchanged two runs apiece, the Warriors caught the Toros by scoring 4 runs in the 5th and took the lead for good one inning later with 4 more runs to complete the weekend sweep of the Toros. Mahr led four Toros with two hits apiece while Garcia scored twice and drove in two to pace the offense.

CSUDH continues its regular season with games at Cal State San Bernardino on April 27-28.
