Wildcats Softball Takes Two From Error-Prone Toros, 6-2 and 9-3

March 9, 2007

Game 1    Game 2

Carson, CA — Cal State Dominguez Hills committed seven errors Friday afternoon as visiting Chico State took 6-2 and 9-3 wins over the Toros in CCAA Conference action. With the losses, CSUDH falls to 11-10, 3-5 CCAA, while CSUC improves to 8-12, 4-8 CCAA.

The Toros started strong to begin the afternoon, taking a 2-0 lead after four innings on #Jodi Nakawatase#'s (Long Beach, CA/Millikan HS) 2nd home run of the year in the 3rd, and an Erika Gonzalez (Los Angeles, CA/Bishop Amat HS) infield RBI single in the 4th. The Wildcats, however, would capitalize on consecutive CSUDH errors in the 5th to tie the contest at 2-2, and score three more times one inning later to take the lead for good in the 6th. In that frame, after Lisa Whitney blasted a 2-run home run to give CSUC a 4-2 edge, the Wildcats scored their third run of the inning after a CSUDH throwing error, and added their final run one inning later in the 6-2 win.

CSUDH didn't fare much better in the nightcap despite taking a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning after an Araceli Martinez (Downey, CA/Warren HS) RBI fielder's choice and Katie Garcia (Riverside, CA/La Sierra HS) RBI groundout as the Wildcats exploded for 6 runs in their top of the 3rd inning, sending 11 batters to the plate and scraping together 5 hits. In the outburst, two Toro errors contributed to the deluge as a Nickie Jarrett 2RBI double proved the big blow.

After the Toros added a single run in the 4th on a Jennifer Frazier (Buena Park, CA/John F. Kennedy HS) home run, the Wildcats continued their offense with three runs in the 7th inning as a home run and two RBI singles accounted for the scores.

Rebecca Johnson had a big day for Chico State with a 5-for-9 day, including three runs scored, while Lisa Whitney drove in four runs in the CSUC sweep. CSUDH starter Jennifer Martinez (La Habra, CA/Cal State Long Beach) took both losses for the Toros, while CSUC's Vanessa Zboril and Rachel Gendron hurled complete game wins for the Wildcats.

The two teams hook up for a double-header tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 12 noon on Toro Diamond.
