LA JOLLA, Calif. – Matt Cantele went 4-for-4 and drilled three homeruns in UC San Diego's 8-3 win over Cal State Domingez Hills in CCAA action at Triton Baseball Field on Thursday afternoon.
Cantele hit his league leading 12th, 13th and 14th homeruns of the season and accounted for five of UCSD's eight RBI. John Roth also came through with two, two-out RBI.
Trevor Decker earned the win, improving to 7-1 on the season. Todd Gimenez and Derek Barham allowed no runs out of the bullpen.
The Tritons improve to 22-11, 12-5 CCAA, while the Toros drop to 8-22-1, 4-13 CCAA. The teams will return to the La Jolla campus for game two of the home-and-home series. First pitch on Friday is set for 2:00 p.m. at Triton Baseball Field.
In the CSUDH second with two outs, Jerit Coleman singled for an RBI and the Toros took a 1-0 lead. CSUDH would load the bases, but Decker struck out the final batter to end the threat without further damage.
With one out in the Triton third, Albitz singled and Cantele blasted a homerun to right center, his 12th of the year, giving the Tritons a 2-1 lead.
With two outs in the CSUDH fourth, Matt Magallon drove an RBI single, tying the game at 2-2. Mateo Marquez then doubled in the go-ahead run to make it 3-2 CSUDH.
In the UCSD fourth with one out, Bryan Silverman doubled to the right center gap. With two outs, John Roth doubled to left for an RBI, tying the game at 3-3.
In the Triton fifth, Albitz led off with a walk and Cantele homered to right, his 13th of the year, pushing the Tritons ahead 5-3.
In the UCSD seventh with two outs, Roth came through with an RBI single, giving UCSD a 6-3 lead.
In the UCSD eighth, Cantele made it a hat trick with his third homer of the game, giving the Tritons a 7-3 lead. Garrett Imeson singled to left for an RBI and UCSD led 8-3.
After Trevor Decker pitched the first six innings earning the win, Todd Gimenez and Derek Barham went the final three, pitching scoreless frames to secure the win.
