San Francisco, Calif---- The San Francisco State University Gators (16-18, 12-10 CCAA) and CSU Dominguez Hills Toros split a CCAA softball doubleheader for the second straight day. SF State won game one 3-2 in eight innings and the Toros (14-13, 6-8 CCAA) won game two 4-1.
In game one, the Toros took a 1-0 lead on Jennifer Martinez's solo home run. SF State tied the game in the fourth, when Nicole Hartfield scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on a lead-off double.
The game remained tied until the Gators' eighth. Danielle Russo reached on a fielder's choice. She advanced to second on a single by Karolyn Gubbine. With one out, Vanessa Rodrigue drove in Russo with a RBI single up the middle.
Vanessa Truan improved to 11-7 as she picked up the win in relief. She pitched 2.2 innings, giving up two hits while striking out one and walking one. Martinez (11-13) picked up the loss for the Toros, pitching 7.1 innings, giving up four hits and two runs while striking out two.
In the night cap, the Toros took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. They added two more in the third inning on RBIs by Michelle Medina and Katie Jordan. CSU Dominguez Hills added an insurance run in the fourth on a solo home run by Jen Frazier. SF State scored its lone run in the seventh on a RBI ground out by Elissa Reizman that scored Jordanna Freemer.
Kaitlin Klein fell to 0-3 for the Gators. She pitched 2.1 innings, giving up two hits and three runs while striking out one and walking two. Martinez (12-13) picked up the win pitching 7 innings, giving up three hits and one run while striking out two and walking two.
Erika Gonzalez and Medina each had two hits to lead the Toro hitting attack. Rodriguez had two hits in game two to become the Gators' all-time career hits leader with 231 hits.
CSUDH takes the field again next week when the team hosts Cal State Bakersfield for twinbills, with Friday's games beginning at 1:00 pm and Saturday's at noon.
