Game 1 Game 2
TURLOCK—The Cal State Stanislaus baseball team grabbed a doubleheader win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday, winning 7-3 in game one and 15-8 in the nightcap.
The wins improve the Warriors to 12-10 overall and 7-8 in CCAA play, while the Toros drop to 8-16-1 overall and 4-11 in league play. The Warriors extend their win-streak to seven games with the wins.
The Warriors and Toros traded runs in the first inning of game one, with the Warriors grabbing the 4-1 lead with a run in the second on Tom Long's run-scoring double and two in the third when Garrett Holtzen scored on a wild pitch and Matt Miller drove in the eventual game winner on a single.
The Toros scrapped back with a pair of runs in the fourth on a Martin Conde single and a sacrifice fly by Matt Sannes, but it would prove to be the last runs for Dominguez Hills in the game.
The Warriors added insurance runs with one in the seventh and a pair in the eighth. Jason Peters grabbed the win after the defense held the Toros to three runs on eight hits to improve to 6-5 on the year. Josh Lewis and David DeMott also pitched in relief allowing just one hit between the two. David Leyva was charged with the loss.
In the second game, the Warriors overcame a 4-0 deficit and pile on the runs for the 15-8 win.
After scoring once in the first, the Toros tacked on three more in the second on a single to right by Matt Magallon to plate one and a two-run single by Houston Hernandez to put the Toros ahead 4-0.
The Warriors cut the lead to 4-2 with two in the second but the Toros fought back and took the 6-2 lead with a two-run third inning.
Stanislaus broke the game open with a seven-run third and a six-run fourth. The Warriors' seven-run outburst was aided by three errors in the inning by the Toros and was highlighted by a two-run double by Dennis Wolfe.
The fourth inning saw first baseman A.J. Valentine hit a three-run, inside the park home run. On the shot to right, the Toros right fielder made a dive for the ball and missed the play, allowing Valentine to leg out the home run. Two batters later, Kyle Bonvechio hit a two-run homer over the fence.
The teams combined for 27 hits and used nine pitchers with Josh Lewis picking up the win in relief to improve to 2-0. Gus Hernandez was charged with the loss for CSUDH.
Each team had five players with two-plus hits with Bonvechio and Wolfe getting three for the Warriors and Hernandez getting three for the Toros.
The teams complete the series on Sunday at 11 a.m.
