Cal State Stanislaus Defeats Toros in CCAA Baseball 7-2

TURLOCK—The Cal State Stanislaus baseball team is like the weather lately, getting hotter as the month goes on. The Warriors extended their winning streak to five games after Friday's 7-2 CCAA win over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Warriors even their record to 10-10 overall and 5-8 in conference action, while the Toros drop to 8-14-1 overall and 4-9 in the CCAA.

Junior Marquis Fleming was able to finally grab a win over the Toros, going the distance, allowing just two runs on nine hits and striking out a season-best 10 batters to improve to 3-2 on the year. Fleming was winless in his two prior outings against the Toros.

The offense was able to pitch in with eight of the Warriors' nine batters tallying a hit with five having a multi-hit game. The team outhit the Toros 14-9.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the first inning with Kevin McCarthy leading off the inning with a single and later scoring on a wild pitch. Cale Moss made it 2-0 on an RBI-double, plating Garrett Holtzen.

The Toros would not go down easy, knotting the game at 2-2 with two in the third inning. Chris Hunter drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly and Dustin Hicks drove in the tying run on a single up the middle.

Stanislaus grabbed the lead for good in the fourth inning when Kyle Bonvechio scored on a double-play to go up 3-2.

The Warriors would add the insurance runs on single-run innings in the sixth and seventh and capped it off with a two-run eighth.

Jeff Phillips was charged with the loss for the Toros, dropping to 2-3 on the year after allowing five runs on 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. James Dodson pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits.

Adam Fonville led the Warrior batters with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Houston Hernandez and Hunter led the Toros with a pair of hits apiece.

The teams resume play with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
