Box Score

Carson, CA – The Sonoma State Seawolves brought out their collective big sticks as they scored 12 runs in the first two innings, including a back-to-back bombs in the 1st to take the series finale over the Toros, 17-5. With the loss CSUDH falls to 8-13-1, 4-8 CCAA and SSU improves to 15-5, 10-2 CCAA.

With the score already 2-0 in favor of SSU and one out and two runners on in the top of the 1st, Eli Rimes would take a 2-2 offering and send it over the wall in right field for a three-run shot of CSUDH starter Rudy Rojas (Lynwood, CA/Cerritos College). Konrad Thieme would then step into the box and take the very next pitch he saw and drive it over the fence in left to give the Seawolves a 6-0 lead.

In the top of the 2nd, the Seawolves would score another six runs, taking advantage of four walks, one hit batsman, one wild pitch, and one passed ball to extend their lead to 12-0, adding two more runs in the 3rd.

After a SSU pitching change to start the bottom of the 4th inning, Michael Craig (Rolling Hills, CA/Pepperdine University) laced a single up the box, and Matt Magallon (Glendale, CA/Bellarmine-Jefferson HS) followed with a single to right. Mateo Marquez (Biggs, CA/Cal State L.A.) would then dig in and blast an 0-1 pitch deep to center field for a three-run homerun.

The Toros would add a single run in the bottom of the 5th on a ground out by Craig, while SSU would tack on another run in the top of the 8th.

In the bottom of the 8th Marquez would head to the plate with two outs, and again take another 0-1 pitch deep for his second homerun of the day.

The Seawolves added a pair of runs in the top of the 9th to finish off the Toros 17-5.

SSU starter Matt Garnett received the no decision as he allowed four runs on six hits while striking out three batters against no walks in 4.0 innings on the mound, while reliever Matt Means picked up his first win of the year, allowing one hit and striking out one batter in three innings on the mound.

Offensively, Rimes would go 4-for-5 on the day with three RBIs, and David Adler and B.J. Collom each had three hits on the day.

Marquez led the Toro offense with three hits and four runs batted in.

CSUDH will hit the road for a four-game set against Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, March 16, and then return home on Wednesday, March 21, to host Pace University, with first pitch slated for 2:00 pm on Toro Field.
