Turlock, CA -- After taking two games on day two of the Cal State Stanislaus-hosted "Best of the West Tournament" by scoring 14 runs in the pair of games, the Toros' bats fell silent as CCAA schools UC San Diego and Chico State bested the Toros by 1-0 and 3-2 scores.
In the opener, CSUDH's Jennifer Martinez and UCSD's Melissa Ward matched one another pitch-for-pitch in the non-conference match-up. Martinez had allowed the Tritons just one hit entering the bottom of the 7th, when Jenny Maze connected for UCSD's second hit of the contest, sending a blast over the fence for the walk-off home run to give the Tritons the thrilling 1-0 win.
Things didn't fare much better in CSUDH's last game of the tourney as Chico State handed the Toros their second-straight loss of the day. Michelle Medina and Christine Bathauer each knocked home a run for CSUDH, but CSUC's Lisa Whitney connected for a home run while Rachel Gendron collected two hits, and Vanessa Zboril allowed just four hits for the Wildcats to escape with the one-run win.
For her efforts, junior hurler Jennifer Martinez was the lone Toro to earn All-Tournament Team honors.
CSUDH, which fell to 3-3, begins CCAA Conference play this Friday as Cal State Monterey Bay visits Toro Diamond for Friday and Saturday doubleheaders, with first pitch of the Friday's twinbill scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
