Game 1    Game 2

Carson, CA – Cal State Monterey Bay would take advantage of eight free passes handed out by the Toros in the opener of a Saturday baseball doubleheader to come away with an 11-8 win on Toro Field. In the nightcap the Toros would capitalize on an Otter error with two outs in the bottom of the 7th to come away with the 8-7 victory to pick up their first CCAA win of the season. With the split the Toros improve to 5-7-1, 1-2 CCAA while CSUMB falls to 5-11, 2-5 CCAA.

CSUMB would strike first in the opener, pushing across a pair of runs in the 1st inning, but the Toros would counter with single runs in the 2nd and 3rd to tie the game at 2-2.

After the Otter's second pitching change of the game to start the 4th inning, Jerit Coleman (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach CC) would lace a single to right, steal second, and be brought home by an RBI single up the middle by Martin Conde (Los Angeles, CA/Fremont HS) for the first of four Toro runs in the inning.

The Otters would match the Toros' offensive output with four runs of their own in the top of the 5th, with the last two coming on a single to center by Brian Trump to knot the game at 6-6.

In the bottom of the 6th Chris Hunter (Vallejo, CA/Vallejo HS) would drive home his second run of the game with a single to right field, scoring Houston Hernandez (La Mirada, CA/St. Paul HS) from second, to give CSUDH the lead at 7-6.

Things would unravel for the Toro bullpen one inning later as CSUMB scored three runs on four hits in the 7th, and two runs on three hits in the 8th to take a 11-7 lead.

Trump would do the damage at the plate for CSUMB in the opener, going 3-for-5 with four runs batted in.

Coleman would be perfect for the Toros at the plate, going 4-for-4, while Dustin Hicks (Lake Forest, CA/Crichton College) chipped in three hits.

In the nightcap the Otters would pick up right where they left off, as Troy Sanchez took a 1-2 offering and sent it over the wall in right center for a solo shot to begin the 1st inning.

Hunter would lead off the bottom of the 3rd with a triple to deep center field and be brought home on a ground out by Mateo Marquez (Biggs, CA/Cal State L.A.). Conde would bring home the second run of the inning on a bunt single four batters later.

The Toros would tack on two more runs in the 3rd to build a comfortable 4-1 lead.

CSUMB would knot the game at 4-4 in the top of the 4th, scoring three runs on four hits.

CSUDH would counter with an RBI single to center by Hernandez who, with two outs and a runner on third, would get himself in a run down to allow the runner from third to score.

Trump would step into the box in the top of the 5th with one out and runner of first and take the second pitch and send it into the wind screen in dead center field for a two-run homerun, knotting the game at 6-6.

Each team would add a run in their half of the 6th to keep the game tied heading into the 7th and final inning.

After a fly out to lead off the bottom of the 7th, Marquez and Scott Moore (Upland, CA/Cal State L.A.) would hit back to back singles and advance to second and third on a Toro ground out.

Brian Sturgis (Hawthorne, CA/Mira Costa HS) would step into the box with two outs and hit a routine ground ball to second that would be booted, allowing Marquez to score from third and give the Toros their first conference win of the year.

Hernandez and Moore would each have two hits apiece for the Toros as Clay Young (Pasadena, CA/Glendale College) picked up his first win of the year in one inning of relief.

The two teams will conclude their four-game series tomorrow with a single game, with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 am on Toro Field.
