Toros Throttle Grand Canyon in 68-59 Win

Jonathan Toliver's 13 points keys workmanlike victory

Box Score
Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills stormed to a 24-4 first half lead over visiting Grand Canyon, and kept the game 'Lopes at bay in taking an eventual 68-59 win on a cold and damp night in the Torodome.

Both teams started slow on a chilly night in Carson as CSUDH took a 4-2 lead with just over three minutes elapsed in the contest.  Senior Mike Steed (pictured), seeing his first action since the first game of the season, made his impact felt immediately by feeding a high-flying Nonso Nibo down the baseline for a dramatic alley-oop jam, and following that dish with a successful 3-pointer to increase the Toros lead to 14-2 at the 12:01 mark, after which Steed again fed Nibo for a long jumper to give CSUDH a 14-point edge.

Nibo then took his turn with an assist as he chased down an outlet pass and tossed the ball over his shoulder to a waiting Danny Tavares, who layed the ball in for an 18-2 lead two minutes later.

The Antelopes' Brad Kanis collected a put-back with 9:19 left in the first half to end GCU's scoring drought, spurring a 10-9 run to get the 'Lopes to within 13 at 27-14 with 6:53 left in the period.

CSUDH, however, put together its own 8-1 run to push the lead to 35-15 over the next three minutes, settling for a 39-22 advantage entering the break.

The teams kept their shooting touches exiting the locker room, with the 'Lopes shaving their deficit to 45-33 at the 12:57 mark on an Andray Glenn bucket.  Fouls would add up early for the Toros in GCU's comeback as they accrued 10 team fouls in the first 10 minutes of the half, keeping the Lopes in the double bonus the rest of the game.

The Toros, however, kept the pressure on, maintaining its lead through the next five minutes until a Glenn bucket brought GCU back to within 10 at 61-51, with an ensuing foul shot by Kanis cutting CSUDH's lead to single digits for the first time since 13:12 in the first period.

Cutting the host's lead to 63-57 on two Milee Karre foul shots with 1:41 remaining, GCU abandoned its zone in favor of a full court press, but CSUDH's crisp ball movement forced the 'Lopes to foul the rest of the way, resulting in the eventual 68-59 win.

Jonathan Toliver paced the Toros with 13 points on 3-of-9 shooting, despite an un-Toliver-like 1-of-7 from behind the arc, while Ryan Walton chipped in 10 points in the win.  In providing a spark, Steed finished with seven points and a game-high seven assists in just 24 mnutes of action.

GCU's Kanis and Rudy Bogan shared game-high scoring honors with 16 points each, but the 'Lopes 17-point halftime deficit proved too much to overcome in the loss.

CSUDH enjoyed a 41-31 edge on the boards and shot 42.1% for the game in leading wire-to-wire.

The Toros, who improved to 4-2 on the year, travel to Vanguard next Saturday before returning home to face Mesa State on Friday, December 21, in their final game of the 2007 calendar year.
