Santa Clarita, CA - Junior Rodney Yearby notched a game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds for his first-career double-double as a Toro in leading CSUDH to a convincing 76-57 win at The Master's College, improving to 3-2 while halting a two-game skid.
The Toros stormed to a 40-26 lead at the break, nailing 15-of-28 shots from the field, despite converting on just 1-of-4 from behind the arc. Conversely, the hosts drained 35.3% of their 3-point attempts, but just 35.7% of their total attempts from the field.
It was more of the same in the second half as CSUDH converted 45.7% of its shots, while holding TMC to just 28.6% shooting from the field.
Size played a huge role in the runaway win as the Toros outmuscled the Mustangs on the boards by a 48-27 count, garnering more offensive rebounds (19) than TMC did on its own defensive end (16) en route to a whopping 50-6 advantage in points in the paint, and a 25-5 edge in second chance points.
Additionally, the quick Toro backcourt, led by three each by Jonathan Toliver and Jamaal Barnes, swiped more steals than their counterparts (10 to 8), while commiting three less turnovers on the evening.
Barnes added 16 points while Danny Tavares contributed 10 points, while Jerrell Smith and Jamel Ward grabbed a combined 15 boards in the win.
CSUDH continues its non-conference schedule on Saturday as Grand Canyon pays the Torodome a visit, with first tip scheduled for 7:30 pm.
