Junior records key three-point play after an offensive rebound down the stretch to seal come-from-behind win

Box Score

Carson, CA — Cal State Dominguez Hills overcame a hot three-point shooting night by visiting Humboldt State and rallied back behind the second-half spark of Ashley Johnson to win its first CCAA contest of the year over the Lumberjacks, 66-60.  With the win, CSUDH improves to 4-1, 1-1 CCAA and HSU falls 2-4, 0-1 CCAA.

HSU came out from deep in the early going, knocking down three of four from downtown in the first three minutes of play to build a 9-7 lead.

After a layup by Brittney Taylor put the 'Jacks up six at 15-9, a trey by Brigayle Iglehart, followed by a drive to the basket and a three-point shot by Jessica Liang gave CSUDH the lead at 17-15 with 13:13 on the clock.

The teams traded buckets over the next five minutes of play until the 7:14 mark when a three by Jennifer Enos gave the 'Jacks the lead at 25-23, which they held until a layup by Aujaneé Baldwin with 48 ticks left knotted the game at 31-31.

Enos fired right back by knocking down a jumper to give HSU a slim two-point lead at 33-31 heading into intermission.

After a slow start in the second half, the 'Jacks found their rhythm, building a 48-41 on a free throw from Paige Peterson with 10:24 in the game.

With the clock showing 7:07 and the Toros still down seven, Baldwin grabbed an offensive board for a put back, which was followed by a pair of free throws by Johnson and consecutive baskets by Baldwin, with the last coming via an old-fashioned 3-point play to put CSUDH ahead 54-52 at the 5:09 mark.

HSU responded on its next possession on another three by Peterson, but Alana Bailey hit one of two free throws after being fouled pulling down an offensive rebound to tie the game at 55-55 with 4:22 left.

Liang and Peterson then traded long-range bombs on consecutive possessions to produce the fifth tie of the game at 58-58.

After a CSUDH missed jumper, Johnson fought hard under her own basket to come away with her third offensive rebound of the half, and converted both the put back and free throw after being fouled with just over 3:00 minutes left to give the Toros the last lead they would need.

Liang led the offense with her fifth-straight double-digit performance of 16 points, including four three-point shots.  Baldwin chipped in a 15 points while Iglehart and Bailey added 11 points apiece.  Johnson scored seven points and pulled down six rebounds off the bench, with five points and five rebounds all coming in the second half.

CSUDH takes a break from conference play next weekend when they take on the University of South Dakota and Concordia University at the Concordia Classic before returning home on Friday, December 28, to face Ferris State at 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
