Seattle, WA -- Senior Corrie Hirokawa found Yvonne Vasquez hovering near the mouth of the UC San Diego goal with just 1:10 left in overtime, and Vasquez slipped her shot past UC San Diego keeper Jessica McGovern to give the Toros their first NCAA playoff win since November 15, 2003, and a date in the second round where they will face 2nd-ranked and undefeated Seattle Pacific University on Saturday at 1:00 pm. Ironically, that win in 2003 was over SPU in the first round, played on the campus of UCSD.
The Toros played the role of aggressor early on, tallying an 11-5 shot advantage over the CCAA South Division champions. After UCSD had an attack stopped by a Toro defender in the 8th minute, CSUDH countered two minutes later when Amy Livergood found herself at point blank range after collecting a scramble in front of the Triton goal, but McGovern smothered Livergood's attempt, keeping zeroes on the board.
That pressure paid off for the Toros in the 19th minute, however, as Vasquez used a touch pass to a waiting Livergood, who blasted her laser to the low left corner past a diving McGovern for a 1-nil lead.
UCSD nearly equalized just seconds before the half as Amanda Esquivel sent a cross into the Toro box that CSUDH keeper Alyssa Congdon came out of her box for, but the ball found empty space and rolled out of bounds as the horn sounded.
After a few dangerous crosses by both teams that came up empty, UCSD finally found paydirt at 66:45 as Natasha Belak-Berger took an Ali Lai feed before whirling around a CSUDH defender and connecting top shelf past an outstretched Congdon to knot the game at 1-1.
That goal gave the Tritons much-needed energy, but Congdon and the CSUDH defense thwarted their attempts, eventually sending the game into overtime.
In the extra frame, Kristen Boskovich nearly gave CSUDH the win at 92:52 as her blast hit the left "L," only to be cleared by the Triton defense. That clear, however, would be UCSD's final hurrah of 2007 as just six minutes later, Hirokawa dribbled down and fed Vasquez, who sent her shot past McGovern and the Toros into the next round against host SPU.
The Toros, who improved to 14-4-4, tallied a 20-12 shot advantage and 5-4 corner kick edge, while Congdon tallied four saves, compared to McGovern's five. With the win, CSUDH posted a 2-0-1 record against the perennial power Tritons, the first time the Toros have gone unbeaten against their southern California rivals.
Last season, the Falcons took a 3-1 decision over the Toros in Seattle, scoring the game's first three goals before a penalty kick accounted for CSUDH's lone score of the evening.
First kick for Saturday's NCAA second round match-up is set for 1:00 pm at Interbay Stadium. The game's live stats can be followed on www.GoToros.com.
