Offensive Droughts Doom Toros as CSUDH Women's Basketball Falls to Sonoma State 61-56

Box Score

Carson, CA - An inconsistent Toros' offense led to long scoring droughts throughout the night as CSUDH could not hold on to its one-point halftime lead over visiting Sonoma State, eventually suffering its first loss of the season in the 2007-08 CCAA home opener.  With the loss CSUDH falls to 3-1, 0-1 CCAA and SSU remains unbeaten at 3-0, 1-0 CCAA.

After the Seawolves scored the game's first two points courtesy of free throws three minutes into the contest, Aujaneé Baldwin tied the game at 2-2 with a sweet 7-footer just 24 seconds later.  SSU then put together an 8-0 run on a pair 3-pointers, only to have CSUDH answer with a 17-0 run over the next five minutes, propelled by Seawolf turnovers and a suddenly-hot Toro offense, and capped by a Brigayle Iglehart bucket with 9:27 left in the first half to give CSUDH a 19-10 lead.

SSU made its own run following the drought by outscoring CSUDH 17-4, capped by a Chelsea Armacost 3-pointer as the shot clock was running down with just under two minutes left in the half, only to have Alana Bailey answer and Jessica Liang connect on a trey of her own with 18 ticks left to give the Toros a 28-27 lead entering the half.

Both offenses showed up early after the break, with the Seawolves capitalizing on countless offensive boards for easy putbacks to take a 42-39 lead eight minutes into the period.  After the Toros tied the contest at 44-44 on a Liang 3-pointer, SSU's Armacost hit a deep bomb from the corner at 8:28 while being fouled, and hit the ensuing free throw to complete the very rare 4-point play for a Seawolf 4-point lead.

CSUDH cut the deficit to 52-49 with 3:40 left and looked to have the opportunity to tie the contest after Liang drove to the hoop and converted lay-up after a collision, but the Alhambra native was called for a charge, nullifying her opportunity to tie the game.

That missed opportunity proved too costly as the Seawolves built their lead to seven on a Lauren Redfield foul shot, and hit three additional free throws down the stretch to seal the 5-point win.

The Toros shot just 39.3% from the field in the second half while the Seawolves connected for 44.0% after the break.  Liang led the Toros with 14 points on 4-of-7 shots from long range, while Baldwin chipped in 13 and Iglehart 11 in the loss.  Bailey was a monster on the boards with 12 rebounds in just 27 minutes of action on the court.

Armacost tallied game-high scoring honors with 18 points, including 7-for-7 at the charity stripe, while Genny Anderson's 12 points aided the win.  SSU enjoyed a 13-7 edge at the free throw line, providing the difference in the win.

CSUDH continues its opening homestand tomorrow night against Humboldt State, with first tip scheduled for 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
