Toros Advance to CCAA Championship Game With 9-8 PK Edge Over Cal State Monterey Bay

CSUDH to face nemesis and top-ranked Sonoma State, which posted 2-0 win over Cal State L.A.

Box Score
Carson, CA – Cal State Monterey Bay's Kevin Proschold sent his penalty kick blast high and wide as the ninth shooter for the Otters in the CCAA Championship Tournament's second men's semifinal, giving the host Toros a 9-8 shoot-out victory over CSUMB, and the opportunity to defend their CCAA Title on Sunday against top-seeded Sonoma State, a 2-0 winner over Cal State L.A. in the first men's semifinal.

After tallying a 9-4 shot advantage in which a Julio Madrigal attempted header that shot off the chest of CSUMB defender Steven Masters was the best scoring chance for either team in the first half, the Toros turned up their attack to the tune of a 17-1 shot edge after the break, creating numerous opportunities.

CSUDH appeared to tally the game's first score in the 56th minute, but a Sammy Rivas score was nullified by an off sides call, keeping zeroes on the board.  At 61:18, Otter Nick McGill was sent off for tallying his second yellow of the game, giving the Toros a man advantage for the final 29 minutes.  Diego Turoldo gave the hosts a lift off the bench in the 75h minute, sending a screamer from 18 that hit the crossbar, bounced down, hit the crossbar and bounced down again before Otter keeper Brenden Baca secured it, only to have Ricky Figueroa's two blasts from 20 yards out in the 78th and 79th minutes just sail over the crossbar.

The Toros had one final look nearly find the back of the net with just seconds remaining in regulation, but Chris Martinez's rocket ricocheted off the post, sending the game in to overtime.

After two sudden victory periods failed to decide the contest resulting in a shoot-out, CSUMB needed just one conversion to advance after the Toros failed to convert on their second attempt.  Keeper Baca, however, returned the unlucky play that plagued the Toros all night as he sent his shot off the crossbar as the 10th kicker, sending the game into “do or die” mode.

In the second session, Tibu Casillas stepped up as the fourth Toro in their rotation and send his shot just off Baca's forearm and into the net, resulting in CSUMB needing a conversion to force the tenth round.  Proschold, however, failed to convert on his attempt, giving the Toros a chance to defend their crown Sunday afternoon.

The Toros outshot the Otters 28-8 overall, but enjoyed just a slim 8-7 advantage in corners, while Derby Carrillo earned one save in the tie, compared to three for Baca.

In other action, an urgent Sonoma State squad used goals by Andrew Bailey at 78:05 and by Mike Travis at 86:02 to put away a pesky Cal State L.A. club and advance to tomorrow's final.  In the contest, the Seawolves outshot the Golden Eagles by a 16-6 count, also tallying an 8-5 corner kick advantage.  SSU's Brook Johnson made one save in the win while CSULA's Noe David was credited for six.

The Toros and Seawolves hook up for the second time this season, with the 2007 CCAA Championship at stake.  Earlier this year in Rohnert Park, SSU took a 2-nil decision with goals scored in both halves, and look to win the CCAA Title for the second time in three years after besting the Toros in 2005.  First kick for the title match is scheduled for 2:00 pm in Toro Stadium.
