Toros Volleyball Cant Get By Jacks in 2007 Season Finale as CSUDH Falls in Four

Box Score

Carson, CA - On a night when the Toros honored departing seniors Tiffany Bull, Jenise Espindola, Sophia Lopes and Kayleigh Spratt#, all four stepped up their respective games and left all they had on the court, but the visiting 'Jacks of Humboldt State ended the Toros 2007 season with a loss (22-30, 30-25, 20-30, 24-30) for the second year in a row.  With the loss CSUDH concludes its season with a 2-27, 1-17 CCAA record while HSU finishes with a 10-16, 6-12 CCAA mark.
After falling behind 9-5 in the opener, CSUDH rallied behind strong serving from Lauren Wells and caught the 'Jacks at 13-13 on a kill from southpaw Marissa Anderson.
HSU cut short any Toro hopes of gaining a lead as Olivia Solomon swung the momentum the 'Jacks' way, where they never looked back.
Anderson led off game two with a kill and the Toros were off to the races, rattling off the game's first four points.
HSU stayed a few steps behind for much of the early going until a swing by Danielle Wells tied the game at 18-18.
CSUDH was not phased as Bull stepped behind the line and serviced four-straight points to give the Toros the lead at 23-19 and much needed momentum, which they rode all the way to the end to take the game.
After the intermission the teams had four early ties culminating at 10-10 before HSU went to work and quickly put away the Toros behind a .367 team hitting percentage.
In the fourth frame the 'Jacks did not let up as they quickly built a 24-17 lead, but freshman Melissa Velasco checked in and stepped behind the service and dropped four-straight points to cut the deficit to 24-20.
HSU called a time out and refocused its attack to get the final six points of the game and take the match.
For the Toros, Lopes notched her 15th double-double of the season with 15 kills and 21 digs on 45 attempts, bringing her season kill total to 343 and her season attack attempt total to 1,041, which is the 7th most in Toro history in both categories.  Espindola's 25 digs gives her a season total of 351, placing her 10th all-time for digs in a season in the Toro record book.  The freshman trio of Ashley Clark, Wells, and Anderson were all in double-figures with 10, 14, and 15 kills, respectively, while Clark also chipped in 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.  Bull bade farewell with 19 assists, four digs, three kills, and one service as one half of the CSUDH setting attack.  Spratt, the other half of the Toro setting tandem, dished out 29 assists to give her 1,635 in her four-year Toro career, placing her 6th all-time.
Next season the Toros return seven letterwinners plus five more players who were lost to injury this season.
