Three Toro Double-Doubles Not Enough as Visiting Bentley College Wins in Five

Ashley Clark, Sophia Lopes, and Tiffany Bull all record double-doubles in loss

Carson, CA - Libero Jenise Espindola's 31 digs and three service aces, accompanied by three Toro double-doubles, was not quite enough as the visiting Falcons of Bentley College found the offense down the stretch to hand the Toros a tough five-game loss, 17-30, 30-28, 30-19, 27-30, 6-15.  With the loss the Toros fall to 2-18 while BC improves to 15-6 on the season.

The Toros came out flat in game one, falling behind 10-2 after a pair of service aces by the Falcon's Jayne Seward.

Lauren Wells ended the Falcon run with a kill and Schauna Porter stepped behind the service line and served three straight points to get CSUDH headed in the right direction.

A kill by Marissa Anderson cut the deficit to just four at 14-10, but the Falcons' Tori Piskulick responded with a kill and BC ran away with the game.

The Toro offense struggled in the opener, hitting at a .000 clip, while the Falcons hit just shy of .300 at at 297.

After nine ties to start game two, with the last at 11-11, the Toros used a solo block by Travette Pettigrew followed by a Falcon ball handling error and kill by Ashley Clark to build a small 14-10 lead.

BC battled back into the game after a pair of kills from Andrea Farah and knotted the game at 17-17, and after two more ties at 18-18 and 19-19, the Falcons built 25-20 lead behind the serving of Piskulick, who served five consecutive points.

Pettigrew ended the Falcon run with a solo block and Espindola stepped behind the line and dropped a pair of aces, bookending a kill from Sophia Lopes, as CSUDH stormed back and tied the game at 26-26 on a kill by Pettigrew.

The teams tied at 27-27 and 28-28 before a  kill by Clark and an ace by Wells finished off the Falcons to knot the match at one game apiece.

After a pair of early ties at 4-4 and 5-5 in game three, the Toros quickly built a 20-10 lead on a kill by Anderson off a set by Tiffany Bull and never looked back, out hitting BC .234 to .025 and easily taking the game 30-19.

Game four was a tight battle with 13 ties, the last of which came at 23-23 after a kill by the southpaw Anderson.

The Falcons capitalized on four straight Toro hitting errors, followed by consecutive kills from Carey Demos, to get some breathing room and build a 28-24, eventually taking the game on kills by Alex Kearney and Christina Sadowski.

CSUDH seemed to run out of gas in game five, falling behind 8-1 as the Falcons hammered kill after kill, eventually hitting .304 in the game to take the deciding game and the match.

Clark led the offense with her third double-double of season with a match-high 21 kills and 17 digs, while Lopes added her team-leading ninth double-double of 12 kills and 15 digs.  Bull chipped in her second consecutive double-double of 47 assists and 14 digs and Wells and Pettigrew each added eight kills apiece.  The 31 digs by Espindola places her tied for eighth all-time in the CSUDH record books for digs in a match, and is the most digs by a Toro since Alicia Zamparelli also recorded 31 digs in 1997.

CSUDH continues CCAA conference play on Friday as the Toros travel to cross-town and 19th-ranked CSULA on Friday, with first serve scheduled for 7 pm.
