No. 6 Toros Fall at No. 21 Sonoma State, 2-0

Box Score

Rohnert Park, CA -- Sixth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills was blanked 2-0 this afternoon by 21st-ranked Sonoma State.  With the loss, CSUDH falls to 9-3 5-2 CCAA, while the Seawolves improve to 10-2-1 and 8-0 in the CCAA.

"This is a great win for us.  Dominguez Hills battled hard and it was a really even game," said SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer.  "Dominguez did a good job of disrupting our play, but our guys really stepped up and found the goals."

With the win, the Seawolves are now 22-2-1 in their last 25 conference games.  They also are starting out the CCAA season with an 8-0-0 record for the second straight year.

In a very physical game between two highly-skilled teams, it was the Seawolves breaking through first when Andrew Bailey scored his CCAA-high 11th goal of the year in the 25th minute.  Casey Dayton made the score possible with a brilliant pass that Bailey headed past CSUDH keeper Derby Carrillo.

Ross Middlemiss put the icing on the cake in the 68th minute when he scored off a double assist by Eric Lafon and Steven Browne.  Lafon crossed the ball in to Browne, who's shot deflection was gathered by Middlemiss and punched into the goal.  It was the third goal of the season for Middlemiss.

Both teams had opportunities to score later in the game, but the SSU defense held strong, thanks in large part to the play of Scott Preckwinkle and Eric Larson.  Ziemer recognized the duo after the game as stars, even though their names don't show up on the scoring log.

Brook Johnson was also stellar in goal, making three saves to record his fifth shutout of the year while Mario Guerrero tallied three shots off the bench in the contest, which snapped CSUDH's modest two-game win streak.

CSUDH continues its CCAA road weekend with a 2:00 pm contest at Humboldt State on Sunday afternoon.
