Guerrero's Hat Trick Leads No. 16 Toros to 8-0 Romp Over CSUSB in Regular Season Finale

CSUDH tunes up for CCAA Tournament by sending seven seniors out in style on Senior Day

Box Score
Carson, CA – Sophomore Mario Guerrero gave his seven Toro seniors a great gift on “Senior Day,” scoring three goals to lead the 16th-ranked Toros to an 8-0 win over visiting Cal State San Bernardino in CSUDH's final regular season home game of the 2007 season.

Senior Corey Prost started the scoring early, taking a rebound and drilling his shot near post past CSUSB keeper Lucas Pepi for a quick 1-0 lead.  That's where the score remained until 15 minutes later when five goals over the next 16 minutes put the game away.

Fellow senior Sammy Rivas started the deluge after taking a feed from Humberto Lopez, beating Pepi far post for a 2-0 lead at 26:09.  Just four minutes later, Guerrero started his scoring surge by beating Pepi for a 50/50 ball, and heading his shot into an empty Coyote net.

At 33:30, senior Ricky Figueroa, who had just scored his first goal as a Toro two days ago in the win over Cal Poly Pomona, notched the second goal of his CSUDH career by taking a Guerrero cross and drilling his shot near post, after which Guerrero tallied his second score of the game after taking a touch pass and blasting his shot near post for a 5-0 advantage.

Senior Devin Toohey got into the act at 42:25, taking a cross from Kris Clark and connecting on a diving header pass Pepi to close the first half scoring.

After the 'Yotes, who fell to 5-11-2, 2-8-2 CCAA, switched keepers after the break, the Toros continued to penetrate the CSUSB defense as Guerrero converted on his third goal of the game at 52:02, collecting a cross and beating Arath De La Rocha far post for his first career hat trick as CSUDH out-shot the Coyotes by a 32-7 count in the contest.

Rivas closed the scoring at 83:25, taking a pass from Irwin Salas and drilling his shot near post for the game's final tally.

Toro keeper Derby Carrillo again was sensational in net, thwarting CSUSB's only real opportunties on the night by stopping Daniel Rodriguez's penalty kick attempt and stoning Albert Cabrera's point blank 1v1 blast on successive plays en route to three saves on the evening.

CSUDH, now 16-3, 12-2 CCAA, thanked seven seniors in Figueroa, Chris Martinez, Julio Madrigal, Prost, Rivas, Jose Serpas and Toohey in a pre-game ceremony.  The Toros, who clinched a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament, will continue their season on Friday, November 2, as the No. 2 seed, and will battle 4th-seeded Cal State Monterey Bay in the day's final match-up, scheduled for 7:00 pm in Toro Stadium, following the battle between top-seeded Sonoma State and 3rd-seeded Cal State L.A. at 4:30 pm.
