Wildcats dig deep to beat Dominguez Hills


CHICO, Calif. – The Chico State women's volleyball team showed off its depth in a 27-30, 30-26, 30-27, 30-22 victory over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night at Acker Gym.

Kelly Smiland rose to the occasion with a career-high 21 kills on .362 hitting and 13 digs, while Amanda Ley ran the offense to the tune of 40 assists. Lacy Stringfellow finished with a game-high 17 digs., and Crystal Trifeletti notched 10 kills, seven digs, and a match-high six blocks. Amy Jones chipped in a career-high nine kills as the 23rd-ranked Wildcats improved to 16-8 overall and 9-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Cal State Dominguez Hills' Sophia Lopes led all players with 22 kills, but the Toros fell to 2-23 overall and 1-13 in the CCAA with the loss. Lopes also had 12 digs. Lauren Wells also finished with a double-double (15 kills and 11 digs) for the Toros, while Tiffany Bull dished out 42 assists and had seven digs.

With their revamped starting lineup, it took some time for the Wildcats to find their way. In fact, after dropping the first game of the night, they trailed 24-21 in the second game. But a 9-2 run got Chico State in the win column and on the road to victory.

Abby Ranzau led all players with six service aces for Chico State, while Samantha Davis tallied four kills, five digs, and three blocks. She teamed up with Trifeletti on three consecutive blocks to end the match in thrilling fashion.

The Toros are next in action tomorrow, Saturday, October 27, when they travel to Turlock, CA to take on Cal State Stanislaus.
