Carson, CA – Cal State Dominguez Hills' berth into the upcoming CCAA Tournament was put on hold for at least a day as a game Cal Poly Pomona squad fought the Toros to a 2-2 double overtime tie Friday afternoon at Toro Stadium, keeping CSUDH in limbo as to whether Sunday's regular season finale truly will be the final game of the 2007 campaign.
The Toros started quickly as Yvonne Vasquez sent a ball in front of the Bronco net, where Kelly Matosian collected and tapped in the sitter for a 1-0 lead just 15 seconds into the contest.
Just 10 minutes later, however, the Broncos, who moved to 9-6-2, 6-6-1 CCAA, leveled the game as Mary Carroll took a feed from Justine Barclay just five feet from the goal, and sent her shot past CSUDH keeper Alyssa Congdon near post for the equalizer.
At the 22 minute mark, the Toros had a great chance to re-take the lead as Vasquez sent a floater that evaded CPP keeper Amanda Cunningham, but Kristen Boskovich's header sailed up instead of forward, keeping the score tied. That was followed by another near miss for the Toros in the 32nd minute, but a scramble in front of the Bronco goal that resulted in the ball landing at Amy Livergood's went for naught as Livergood's blast went wide.
After the break, CSUDH again struck quickly as Vasquez took a through ball from Natalie Moreno at the 45:31 mark and blasted it by Cunningham for the go-ahead goal.
Like in the first half, however, CPP answered, this time at 59:31 as Britany Garrett sent a floater from 20 yards out that sailed over Congdon's outstretched arms to knot the game at 2-2.
CSUDH had one final chance in regulation as Livergood took a feed from Cassie McKay with a minute left, but her blast from 15 yards was smothered by Cunningham as Vasquez lurked nearby for the potential rebound.
In the extra session, the Toros missed on two opportunities, the first on an indirect kick just wide from Corrie Hirokawa, and the second on a clear in front of the CPP zone gone uncollected as the first overtime expired.
The Broncos had a great chance just two minutes into the second overtime with a 2-on-none break, but Mary Carroll launched her shot from 18 yards instead of moving forward with the ball, resulting in a shot gone wide.
CPP had one final opportunity as time wound down, but Carroll's uncontested header bounced just wide as the clock hit zeros, ending the game in a 0-0 tie.
The Toros outshot CPP 22-13 overall, but were outshot 4-0 in the second extra session, while gaining a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. Congdon was credited with 4 saves while her counterpart tallied 7 in the tie.
With the tie, CSUDH assures itself berth into the CCAA Tournament if the Toros win on Sunday, or if Cal State Stanislaus either ties or loses against Chico State on Saturday.
CSUDH, now at 12-3-4, 7-3-3 CCAA, hosts Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday at 2:30 in Toro Stadium, marking the final game for nine Toro seniors playing in their final regular season home contest.
