No. 16 Toros Tune Up for CCAA Tournament With 3-1 Win Over Cal Poly Pomona

CSUDH wins sixth-straight heading into Sundays regular season finale

Box Score
Carson, CA – Cal State Dominguez Hills used a balanced attack in taking a 3-1 win over visiting Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night in Toro Stadium, benefiting from two Toros in Kris Clark and Ricky Figueroa (pictured) who each scored the first goal of their Toro careers in lifting CSUDH to its sixth-straight match heading into Sunday's regular season finale.

In a whistle-filled first half in which 32 fouls were called, the Toros had the game's first opportunity on a 2-on-1 breakaway in the 7th minute, but a Sammy Rivas drop pass to Jose Serpas was intercepted by a Bronco defender, nullifying the threat.  CPP's Wayne Kao answered with his own threat in the 12th minute, but pulled his sitter just wide of the goal, keeping zeros on the board.

That all changed at 31:10, however, as Mario Guerrero sent a waist-high cross through the Bronco zone, which Rivas collected and headed near post for a 1-0 Toros lead.

The Broncos, which fell to 6-7-3, 5-5-3 CCAA, had the second half's first chance in the 50th minute as a loose ball wound up at the feet of Ryan Sheirich just five feet from the goal.  CSUDH keeper Derby Carrillo, however, met Sheirich's blast head on, and Sheirich's rebound was blocked by the Toro defense, keeping the Toros up a goal.

CSUDH capitalized on that momentum at 61:46 as Clark sent a blast from 20 yards out that went just off CPP keeper Brian Catalano's fingertips and into the back of the net for a two-goal lead.

The Broncos would cut the deficit in half at the 72:51 mark after a CPP defender was tackled in the box, resulting in a penalty kick attempt on which Miguel Abascal went top shelf to beat Carrillo.  Just under a minute later, however, CPP's momentum was stopped cold as Bronco Jason Sanchez was issued a red card for serious foul play on CSUDH's Andrew Marinez giving the Toros a man advantage the rest of the contest.

That advantage paid off at the 88:57 mark as Figueroa took a feed from Guerrero, dribbled through and around the CPP defense, and launched his shot off Catalano's hands for the game's final tally.

The two teams combined for 57 fouls, 6 cautions and the single red, while CSUDH tallied an 18-12 shot and 7-4 corner kick advantage in taking both regular season contests from CPP.  Catalano ended the contest with 6 saves while Carrillo saw his shutout streak end at two, making 3 saves on the evening.

CSUDH, now 15-3, 11-2 CCAA, concludes its regular season on Sunday as Cal State San Bernardino pays Carson a visit for both teams' regular season finale.  Prior to the contest, seven Toro seniors will be honored as they play in their final regular season home contest in Toro Stadium, with first kick scheduled for 5:00 pm.
