Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills utilized an aggressive offense and suffocating defense on a temperate Sunday morning, resulting in a 2-0 win over visiting Chico State to improve to 14-3, 10-2 CCAA.  Sophomore forward Mario Guerrero tallied what proved to be the game-winner at the 29:05 mark while sophomore keeper Derby Carrillo made four saves in earning his eighth shutout as CSUDH posted its fourth-consecutive win.

The Toros had an early opportunity at the 6:01 mark as a streaking Sammy Rivas sent a good cross towards the middle, but Humberto Lopez lost his footing just five feet from the box, mis-firing on his header.

Just four minutes later, Andrew Marinez sent a cross that Rivas dummied, but his decoy caused teammate Jose Serpas to put on the breaks, allowing the Wildcat defense to clear the ball.

CSUC got its first good look at 15:56 on a long pass over the top of the Toro defense, and after AJ Carboneau collected the ball and heeled it back to give Ian Hilgart a point-blank shot, but Carrillo deflected the blast, and Chico State's rebound attempt sailed wide to keep the game scoreless.

That all changed in the 29th minute as Guerrero stole the ball, wheeled and split two defenders, and sent a rocket from 25 yards out to the near post for the first score of the day.

CSUDH turned up its offensive intensity by outshooting the Wildcats 13-8 after the break, eventually finding paydirt at the 89:24 mark after a cross from Scott Mariano found the feet of Marinez, who beet the keeper far post to give CSUDH an insurance goal.

The Toros tallied a 26-10 shot advantage on the day, also out-cornering their opponents by a 6-2 count, including a 4-0 tally in the second half, while the Wildcat keeper duo of starter Brian Linne and Dan Dickson combined for seven saves.

A physical battle, the two teams combined for 44 fouls, eight yellow cards and one red card.

The Toros conclude the regular season next weekend as they host Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, October 26, before Cal State San Bernardino visits Carson two days later for the final contest of the regular season.
