No. 25 CSUDH Dominates in 2-1 Victory Over Western Washington

Toros use 11-0 second half shot advantage to run win streak to three

Box Score
Carson, CA -- Forwards Corrie Hirokawa and Yvonne Vasquez both scored goals as 25th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills outshot visiting Western Washington 16-3, including 11-0 in the decisive second half, to forge a come-from-behind 2-1 win on a cool Tuesday night in Toro Stadium.

The visitors got on the board early as Amanda Font sent a through ball to Claire Morgan near the top of the box.  After collecting the pass, Morgan lofted her shot over the outstretched arms of CSUDH keeper Alyssa Congdon for a 1-0 lead, the first goal the Toros have allowed in the past five games.

Western Washington, which fell to 8-3-1, had a chance for a 2-0 lead, but a 1v1 opportunity by Rosie Zadra after a Toro defender slipped was stoned by Congdon from 8 yards out, keeping the game at 1-0.

Just minutes later, the Vikings let a pass slip through its defense right to the feet of Kelly Matosian, but Viking keeper Theresa Fish stopped Matosian's blast from 6 yards out to keep the Toros off the board.

That all changed at the 30:02 mark, however, as Hirokawa took an indirect kick from 20 yards out and beat Fish top shelf to level the game at 1-1, with Hirokawa's goal stopping WWU's shutout streak at three games.

After the break, the Toros continued to pressure the Viking defense, finally breaking through in the 78th minute.  At 78:29, Hirokawa sent a line drive corner towards the mouth of the goal, where Vasquez managed to control and somehow maneuver her shot over Fish's head for the go-ahead score.

The Vikings threatened in the 83rd minute as a cross deep in the Toro zone got by the CSUDH defense, but WWU forward Molly Shannon was unable to collect, quelling the would-be rally.  That missed opportunity set up Hirokawa a minute later, but her blast from 25 sailed just over the crossbar to account for the final threat of the night.

An aggressive Toro offense collected 5 corners to WWU's 1, while forcing Fish to make 4 saves compared to one by Congdon.  Hirokawa led the CSUDH offense with 6 shots, while three other Toros tallied 2 shots each.

CSUDH, now 8-1-3, hits the road for CCAA Conference play the next two weekends before returning home on October 19 to host Cal State Stanislaus for the second-to-last weekend of the regular season.
