Carson, CA – Seventeenth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills finally found paydirt 3:46 into overtime as Humberto Lopez collected a loose ball deep in visiting Cal State Stanislaus' box, and blasted it far post for a 1-0 win, a victory that gave CSUDH men's soccer head coach Joe Flanagan his 200th career victory at the helm of the men's program.
The Toros got off to a quick start as Sammy Rivas found himself 1v1 with CSUS keeper Mando Herrera at the 5 minute mark, but his blast from 2 feet out sailed both high and wide, keeping zeros on the board early.
Twenty minutes later, Rivas took a feed to the keeper's left from about 15 yards away, but his angled shot bounced off the far cross bar, ricocheted to the near crossbar, and eventually was cleared by a Warrior defender, keeping both teams off the board in the game's first 45 minutes of play.
After intermission, CSUDH again had the first good look in the 60th minute as a give-and-go between Jordan Rover and Mario Guerrero found Jordan in front of the CSUS net, but the Warrior keeper quickly closed the foot-long gap, causing Rover's shot to sail wide.
A Toro indirect kick in the 68th minute nearly got CSUDH on the board, but a Scott Mariano blast from 25 was punched away by Herrera, keeping the game scoreless.
Rivas again had an opportunity seven minutes later, but his header bounced off the post, nullifying the Toro charge.
In the 82nd minute, CSUDH had a great look as the Warrior keeper and his defender collided deep in the box which allowed Rivas to slot a gimme to Jose Serpas, but Serpas misfired on the sitter, wasting a golden opportunity to close the game out in regulation.
While regulation proved uneventful for CSUDH, the Toros quickly recovered in overtime as Lopez took a loose ball in the box at 93:46, and beat CSUS' Herrera far post for the game winner.
The Toros out-shot the visitors 20-5, including 9-1 after the first period, while tallying an 8-2 advantage in corners. Herrera was kept busy in net with 6 saves, while Derby Carrillo made 2 in the win.
