La Jolla, CA -- The 18th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team scored early and often, and the result was a convincing 5-1 win over host UC San Diego this afternoon on Triton Field, in which senior forward Jose Serpas (pictured) scored what proved to be the eventual game-winner as five different Toros scored on the afternoon.
UC San Diego fell to 2-9-2 overall and 1-6-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play with the loss while the Toros improve to 11-3-0 overall and 7-2-0 in league action.
CSUDH dominated nearly every statistical category on the evening, taking 19 shots on the night, 10 of which were on goal, while limiting the Tritons to eight shots overall, three of which were on frame. The Toros held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks while also committing two less fouls than the Tritons who were whistled for infractions on 10 occasions.
Of those 10 Toro shots on goal, five found the back of the net, two in the first half and three more in the second. Humberto Lopez began the onslaught in the 22nd minute, finding the upper left corner from 25 yards out off a pass from Serpas. The tally was Lopez's fourth of the season. Serpas would put CSUDH up by a 2-0 margin in the 25th minute, sliding his sixth goal of the season into the back right corner from a tough angle on the short left side, with Andrew Marinez picking up the assist.
Diego Turoldo made the score 3-0 in favor of the Toros in the 54th minute of the contest, slamming home his first goal of the year from 17 yards out. Turoldo found the upper left corner after a solid lead pass from Mario Guerrero set up the shot.
The Tritons finally got on the board in the 58th minute as freshman Brandon Yee scored his first career collegiate goal, using his left foot to find the upper left corner off passes from Tony Choi and Joe Shah.
CSUDH responded right back at the 60 minute mark as Hiram Rangel sent a free kick into the penalty area from 40 yards out that no one got in front off before it found the lower right corner for his second goal of the year. The Toros concluded their scoring in the 79th minute when UCSD netminder Peter Akman tried to clear the ball but his kick deflected off a hard charging Sammy Rivas and caromed into the net for a 5-1 Toro advantage.
Akman made five saves in addition to allowing the five CSUDH goals while Derby Carrillo and Justin Commins each made one save while splitting time between the pipes for the Toros.
CSUDH continues CCAA road play with a key conference, regional and national showdown at cross-town rival Cal State L.A. on Sunday, with first kick scheduled for 12:30 pm at Jesse Owens Track.
