ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Fueled by an 18-0 run to start the second half, Cal State Dominguez Hills beat Sonoma State 56-51 in CCAA women's basketball action Thursday night in Rohnert Park.
The win lifts the Toros to 6-2, 3-1 CCAA, while the Seawolves fall to 3-6, 2-3 CCAA.
Sonoma State got off to a solid start behind the first-half play of sophomore Heidi Mertle who had ten points and eight rebounds. A 10-2 spurt over the final five minutes of the half made it 32-26 at the break.
The Toros came out charging in the second half, rolling out 18 consecutive points over the first six plus minutes. Brigayle Iglehart led the way with 12 of those points, pushing CSUDH's lead to 44-32.
SSU would cut into the lead with three-pointers by Lauren Redfield, who had ten of her game-high 12 points in the second half. However, as close as the Seawolves got, they couldn't overcome the Toros as a pair of Aujanee Baldwin free throws iced it in the final seconds.
Iglehart led the Toros with 20 points while Ennisha Kyles had 11 rebounds.
CSUDH outshot SSU 45% to 30% for the game.
Redfield led a trio of Seawolves in double figures. Mertle and Danae Wellander each finished with ten points. Redfield and Mertle led the Seawolves on the glass with eight and nine rebounds respectively.
Cal State Dominguez Hills stays on the road, playing at Humboldt State Saturday night. Sonoma State returns to action the same night when they host UC San Diego.
