Carson, CA - The Cal State San Bernardino women's basketball team used seven long-range bombs and a 52.2 field goal percentage in the second half to turn a one-point halftime lead into a 61-46 blowout of the Toros Saturday night in the Torodome. With the loss, CSUDH falls to 8-5, 5-4 CCAA and CSUSB improves to 10-4, 6-3 CCAA.
Both teams were evenly matched in the early going with ties at 4, 6, 8, and 11.
CSUDH would grab the first real advantage in the game with a four-point lead at 15-11, thanks to a trey by Michelle Kribell (Buena Park, CA/Western HS) after an offensive rebound by Ennisha Kyles (Los Angeles, CA/Mast HS) at the 9:17 mark.
Krystal Urzua would nail back-to-back three-point shots five minutes later to produce the game's fifth tie at 19-19 with just under three and a half minutes remaining.
CSUDH would rebuild its four-point lead on consecutive jumpers by Brittney Blankenship (Palmdale, CA/Palmdale HS) with 2:41 on the clock, but CSUSB would use a layup by Jaclyn Rainville, followed by a deep trey by Erica Doyle to steal a one-point advantage heading into intermission.
The Coyotes would turn it on after the break, extending their lead to 30-23 in the first three minutes, and then to 38-27 at the 13:04 mark.
CSUSB would show no signs of cooling down over the next seven minutes, stretching its lead to 21 at 53-23 with 5:40 on the clock.
The Toros would try and battle back and cut the lead to 11 on a layup by Michele Hale (Los Angeles, CA/Cal State Monterey Bay) with under two minutes left, but the Coyote defense would hold firm and eventually push the lead back up to 15 before the buzzer sounded.
Overall the Coyotes would out-shoot the Toros 42.9% to 28.1.% from the floor, and win the battle of the long range bombs by a 7 to 1 tally.
One small silver lining for the Toros was the team's 13-for-15 performance at the charity stripe.
Vanessa Wilt led four Coyotes in double figures, garnering both game-high scoring and rebounding honors with 16 points and 17 boards. Urzua and Doyle added 12 points apiece while Rachel Johnson rounded out the players in double figures with 11 points.
Blankenship led the offense with nine points and eight rebounds, with Brigayle Iglehart (San Diego, CA/Grossmont College) and Alana Bailey (Altadena, CA/John Muir HS) each chipping in eight points in the effort.
CSUDH will next be in action Friday, January 26, when they travel to Cal State Monterey Bay for game one of a five-game road trip, before returning home on Friday, February 9, to host Humboldt State.
