Carson, CA - Brigayle Iglehart's (San Diego, CA/Grossmont College) 21 points led a trio of Toros in double figures as CSUDH beat visiting Cal Poly Pomona 70-63 in the Torodome on Friday night. With the victory, CSUDH improves to 8-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play, while the Broncos fall to 4-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Jessica Liang (Alhambra, CA/Mark Keppel HS) came out locked and loaded, nailing a long-range bomb to kick off an 8-2 Toro run over the first two and a half minutes.
The Broncos would respond with three straight buckets by Jessica Hopkins to knot the game at 8-8 with 15:15 showing on the clock.
The two teams would remain close over the next three minutes before and offensive rebound and put back by Michele Hale (Los Angeles, CA/Cal State Monterey Bay) would ignite an 8-0 Toro run, putting CSUDH up 24-15 with 10:30 left.
A trey by Lauren Kitaguchi followed by back-to-back buckets by Ashley Moody and Porsche Kirksey would cut the Toro lead to just two.
The Toros' lead would fluctuate over the next seven minutes before a jumper by Mallory Avila (Rialto, CA/Carter HS) at the 2:13 mark put CSUDH back up nine at 40-31, but CPP's Kirksey would respond with a basket to send the teams into intermission with CSUDH ahead 40-33.
CPP would disintegrate the Toro lead after the break, finding themselves down only one after a layup by Vanessa Dominguez at the 16.59 mark.
After a Toro time out, Brittney Blankenship (Palmdale, CA/Palmdale HS) would drive to the basket to stop the Bronco momentum, and eventually the Toros would extend their lead to 11 on a Blankenship trey with 8:23 remaining in the contest.
The Toros lead would hover around double digits over the next five minutes, and CSUDH would close out the visiting Broncos despite missing seven free throws in the last two minutes.
As a team the Toros only shot 41.7% (10-for-24) from the charity stripe to the Broncos' 76.0% (19-for-25).
The Broncos were led by Dominguez's double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Jessica Hopkins chipped in 16 points in the effort.
In addition to Iglehart's 21 points, Blankenship and Alana Bailey (Altadena, CA/John Muir HS) were both in double figures with 16 and 11 points, respectively.
CSUDH will next be in action tomorrow night when they host Cal State San Bernardino, with tip-off slated for 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
