TURLOCK, Calif.—It was a penalty kick against the Warriors that led to the only score as the Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team fell to visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0, in CCAA action at Warrior Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Warriors had the upperhand in the offensive department with a 19-15 lead on shots. The squad had seven shots on goal but could not find the back of the net. The Warriors drop to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Toros improve to 7-2 and 3-2 in the CCAA.
The Toros were awarded the kick in the 51st minute after a foul in the penalty box. Andrew Marinez connected the PK to give the Toros the 1-0 lead.
After going down 1-0, the Warriors launched the offensive, tallying 12 shots with six on goal in the final 40 minutes of play The Warriors played a man down after a red card to 'keeper Jose "Mando" Herrera in the 80th minute, but continued to pepper the goal with six shots and three on net in the final 10 minutes.
The Warriors had a solid opportunity to score with two minutes left after Frank Coelho (Modesto/Johansen HS) headed the ball and after a save, Brice Burchett (Arcata/Arcata HS) got off a shot that barely sailed over the net.
Coelho led the Warriors with four shots and three on goal. Kyle Holland had five shots for the Toros with two on net.
Kyle Polak was sellar in goal for the Toros, making seven saves on 19 shots faced. Herrera made three saves in the loss for the Warriors.
Cal State Dominguez Hills next plays at Cal State L.A. on Thursday, with the start at 4:30 p.m.
