Carson, CA -- Senior keeper Kyle Polak (Huntington Beach, CA/CS Fullerton) notched his sixth win of the season and 37th in his Toro career to become the school's all time career wins leader, as the Toros rode single goals by Sammy Rivas (Long Beach, CA/CS Fullerton) and Scott Mariano (Artesia, CA/Gahr HS) in the first half to take a 2-0 win over visiting Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday evening in Toro Stadium. With the win, CSUDH improves to 6-0, 2-0 CCAA, while CSUSB falls to 1-4, 0-2 CCAA.
Rivas got the Toros on the board early, intercepting an attempted clear in front of the CSUSB goal and rocketing his shot past diving Coyote keeper Lucas Pepi near post for a 1-0 lead at the 5:59 mark.
Mariano added an insurance goal 30 minutes later as he took a cross from Jesse Graham (San Diego, CA/Pt. Loma HS) at 35:39 and beat Pepi far post for a 2-0 advantage.
That would prove to be more than enough for Polak and the CSUDH defense, which posted its fifth shutout in six games. Polak, who made three saves in the game, broke the tie he shared with former Toro keeper Chris Wilson, and now stands alone atop the CSUDH record book for career wins.
CSUDH out-shot the Coyotes 16-9, including an 11-4 advantage in the first 45 minutes of play, while out-cornering CSUSB 5-2, including a 4-0 margin after intermission.
CSUDH travels to UC San Diego on September 12 for the first of five-consecutive contests away from Toro Stadium, before returning home on Friday, September 29, to host Humboldt State for a 7:00 p.m. first kick.
