SEATTLE, Wash. – The fifth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros cooled off the Seattle University offense and capitalized on their own scoring chances to defeat the Redhawks, 3-0, Thursday afternoon in men's soccer action at Championship Field.
Dominguez Hills took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute as Sammy Rivas bounced a header towards the net that was batted away by Seattle goalie Chris Sorensen (Seattle, Wash.). The ball bounced in front of the net, where Mario Guerrero was waiting to tap it into the net to put the Toros on top.
In the second half, the Toros continued to pressure the Seattle defense, converting in the 63rd minute when Julio Madrigal found a streaking Jose Serpas, who chipped the ball into the net to give Dominguez Hills a 2-0 lead. Dominguez Hills picked up an insurance goal late when Rivas found Jesse Graham in perfect position to send the ball past Sorensen and into the net.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-0) outshot Seattle 14-12, including eight shots on goal versus Seattle's four shots on goal. Kyle Polak started the match in net and picked up two saves, and then Derby Carrillo relieved him after halftime and earned one save in the second half. Sorensen finished with five saves for the Redhawks.
The Toros return home for a Tuesday (Sept. 5) match when Grand Canyon's men come calling. Start is 7:00 p.m.
