POMONA -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team defeated Cal Poly Pomona 6-3, Thursday at Scolinos Field, officially eliminating the Broncos from CCAA tournament consideration.

Cal Poly Pomona (20-28, 15-17) grabbed a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning on a run-scoring single by Kirk Gross, but the Toros took the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning on a two-out, two-run home run by Martin Conde. Cal State Dominguez Hills (28-16, 17-10) added two more runs in the ninth inning to account for the final outcome.

The Toros jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Conde singled, moved to second on a sacrifice by Fred Medina and scored on a run-scoring single by Houston Hernandez. Hernandez took second on the throw home, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single up the middle by Jason Klug.

Cal Poly Pomona sliced the lead to 2-1 in the fifth. Gross doubled in the right-centerfield gap and scored on a single by Marc Evans. The Broncos then took a 3-2 lead in the sixth with a two-run rally. Jake Mendrin doubled with two outs and scored on a double by Tony Esquer. Gross followed with a single up the middle to drive in Esquer with the go-ahead run.

The lead, though, didn't last long. Cody Puckett singled with one out and scored on Conte's two-out home run to left field. Perez tripled to lead off the ninth and scored on a double by Marquez. Puckett advanced Marquez to third with a fly out to right and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Hunter.

Cal State Dominguez Hills starter Jason Garcia went the distance, scattering nine hits and allowing three earned runs. He didn't walk a batter and struck out six, including four in a row early in the game. He earned the complete game when John Daniels lined into a doubleplay to end the contest.

Luis Carreras pitched eight strong innings for the Broncos and left in the ninth inning after allowing a leadoff triple to Isidro Perez. He allowed nine hits and five runs in his final start at Scolinos Field.

The teams play again Friday in Pomona, with the game starting at 2:30 p.m.
