LOS ANGELES -- Cal State Dominguez Hills kept its title hopes alive with an 11-9 win over UC San Diego in an elimination game of the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Championship.
The Toros banged out 17 hits to earn all but one of their runs tin advancing to the championship round in their first tournament appearance.
Designated hitter Chris Hunter led the way with 3 hits, including 2 home runs, and 3 runs batted in. Freshman shortstop Cody Puckett also homered as one of his 3 hits to go with an additional run scored and 2 RBI. Third baseman Kyle Stanley went 2 for 5 with a home run, 2 runs scored and 4 RBI.
UC San Diego catcher David Morehead had 2 hits, including his 12th homer of the season, and RBI to lead the Tritons.
CSUDH pitcher Ryan Owen went 7 innings, allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits and a walk while striking out 8 to earn the victory. Fred Medina pitched a perfect final inning to notch his second save of the year.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (33-17) earned a tournament rematch against unbeaten Chico State. The Toros must beat the Wildcats twice on Saturday to win their first CCAA Championship since 1994. First pitch is set for 12 noon. UCSD dropped to 35-24 on the season and will await word on a possible NCAA Division II playoff bid.
