LOS ANGELES -- Cal State Dominguez Hills pounded out 14 hits en route to a 9-0 win over tournament host Cal State L.A. in an elimination game of the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Championship.
Each member of the Toros' offensive lineup finished with at least one hit, led by second baseman Houston Hernandez' 4 for 5 effort that included a double. Hernandez also stole 2 bases, scored 4 runs and drove in another.
CCAA Player of the Year Jason Klug gave the Toros a 2-0 lead with a 2-run homer in the first inning. He finished with a pair of hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI.
Klug's early blast was all starting pitcher Chris Borchers needed. Borchers, named CCAA Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday, showed why, as he scattered 7 hits and a walk while striking out 6 on his way to a complete-game shutout. The win improved Borchers to 9-2 on the season.
Isidro Perez ripped a run-scoring double in the third inning and Kyle Stanley belted a 2-run homer in the fifth to push the Toro lead to 5-0. An inning later, Hernandez singled to drive in Fred Medina for CSUDH's sixth run after Medina tripled to left with one out. The Toros capped the scoring with three unearned runs in the final frame.
Cal State Dominguez Hills improved to 32-17 on the season and kept its CCAA title hopes alive. Cal State L.A. fell to 32-14-1 but remains in contention for an NCAA Division II Championship berth.
