BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The No. 10 Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team split with No. 6 Cal State Bakersfield, winning 5-3 in Friday's opener before dropping a 7-0 game in the nightcap. The two teams were in a battle for first place in the CCAA at the Roadrunner Softball Complex in Bakersfield.
The Roadrunners, who improve to 35-7 on the season, held on to first place in the conference standings at 12-2. Bakersfield holds a slim one-game lead in the loss column over the Toros who move to 28-5 overall and 7-3 in CCAA play.
Senior Christie Hill (Delano HS) was perfect from the plate, going 6-for6 on the afternoon with a home run, two doubles and three singles. Hill opened the first game with a double and later scored on Bethany Snow's (Agoura Hills/Bethany College) two RBI double in the bottom of the first.
The runs looked as if they might hold up as Hill held the Toros to just one hit through the first four innings. However, the wheels came off in the fifth as Dominguez Hills pounded out seven hits and scored four runs to take the lead. Kate Groden delivered the back-breaker, driving a two-RBI single to right center to give the Toros a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Hill responded with a solo homer deep to right centerfield. The blast was the 10th of the season for the senior, giving her the single-season school record in that category.
Dominguez Hills added a late insurance run in the top of the seventh and Jackie Miller closed the door, allowing just three hits after the second inning to earn her ninth win of the season. Hill dropped to 16-5 with the loss.
Bakersfield took out its frustrations early in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning thanks to a pair of Dominguez Hills' errors. Senior first baseman Amber Mills (Simi Valley/Royal HS) drove home a pair in the inning with her third triple of the year.
The Roadrunners added three in the second thanks to a three-run homer by shortstop Renee Rubio (Duarte/Baldwin Park HS). With a huge cushion, pitcher Melissa Wooldridge (Salida/Florida CC) went to work, scattering six hits and striking out seven to run her record to 10-2 on the season.
The two teams meet again on Saturday (Apr. 8) in Carson as the second part of a home-andhome series.
