LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball teams split a doubleheader on Saturday at Triton Baseball Field. UCSD won the first game 8-5, but CSUDH came back to take the nightcap, 6-1. CSUDH is 23-16, 12-10 CCAA while the Tritons are 26-21, 15-13 CCAA.
Game One
In the second inning, Scott Clement doubled off the right field wall. David Gomez then homered to right field to put the Tritons ahead 2-0.
After CSUDH scored in the third, Matt Cantele tripled to left center and came around to score as the relay was thrown into the dugout and the Tritons led 3-1.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, Jose Escobar doubled and scored on Brandon Asire's single, 3-2 UCSD.
In the UCSD fourth with two-out and two on, Jonathan Erickson singled to left field for an RBI to put UCSD ahead 4-2. The Tritons would load the bases before the end of the inning.
After UCSD's Trevor Decker retired the CSUDH side in order for the first time in the fifth, Cantele led off the Triton fifth with a solo homerun to give UCSD the 5-2 edge.
CSUDH put two on with one out in the sixth on back-to-back singles. Brendan Kruse then came on to pitch for UCSD and got the next Toros' batter to hit into a double-play, ending the inning with the Tritons leading 5-2.
With two outs in the UCSD sixth, Josh Tanner walked and Damian Fante was hit-by- pitch. Cantele sinlged to center, scoring Tanner for the 6-2 lead. With runners on the corners, Cantele stole second and Fante scored from third on an error on the throw home. UCSD led 7-2 through six.
With two outs in the CSUDH seventh, Kyle Stanley hit a solo homerun to right field to bring CSUDH within 7-3.
UCSD's Clement and Gomez walked to lead off the seventh. Garret Imeson then blooped a single to right, loading the bases with no outs. John Roth then hit into a fielders' choice, scoring Clement
CSUDH added two more runs in the eighth to close within 8-5.
Byron Grubman came on to record the final five outs for UCSD.
Game Two
In the UCSD first, Fante was hit-by-pitch and stole second. With one out, Morehead doubled to center field, scoring Fante giving UCSD the 1-0 lead in the first.
In the CSUDH third with one out, Fred Medina tripled to right center. With two outs, Kyle Stanley singled to right field for the RBI, tying the game 1-1.
The Toros broke through with three runs in the fourth, two of which came unearned to lead 4-1.
In the UCSD sixth, Fante led off with an infield single up the middle and Cantele drew a walk. A UCSD double play ball ended the inning and UCSD still trailed 4-1.
CSUDH added two more runs in the sixth, with the help of two UCSD errors and won 6-1.
