SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State Dominguez Hills, the nation's 10th-ranked softball team in NCAA Division II, scored the first nine runs Friday en route to a 13-6 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal State San Bernardino.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out.
The Toros improved to 30-6 on the season and 9-4 in the CCAA. The Coyotes are now 8-9 in the CCAA and 15-25 overall. CSUSB will host Cal State Bakersfield, ranked No. 6 in the nation, at noon Saturday.
Cal State Dominguez Hills pounded out 13 hits off four Coyotes pitchers. Kate Groden hit a three-run homer in the first off CSUSB starter and loser Rozz Rios (6-13) and Kristine Minter slugged a grand slam homer in the fifth off Coyotes reliever Katie Adkins.
Groden finished with three hits in three at bats and six RBI while Pebble Prestwood went two-for-four and Natalie Greco was two-for-three for the Toros. Minter picked up the win in relief (12-0), throwing 3.1 innings of no-hit ball.
The Coyotes managed just five hits against the combined efforts of Miller and Minter but scored all six runs in the fourth inning, four of them coming on a grand slam homer by Melissa Rodriguez, her third home run of the season.
