SAN BERNARDINO – Cal State Dominguez Hills broke open a pitcher's duel with Cal State San Bernardino with five runs in the seventh inning Thursday en route to a 7-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball victory over the Coyotes.
The Toros improved to 19-13 on the season, 8-7 in the CCAA, while the Coyotes – tied for second place in the CCAA entering the game – slipped to 16-13 overall and 12-9 in the conference.
The second game in the four-game series will start at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Fiscalini Field.
Coyotes starting pitcher Tim Montoya (3-4) pitched one-hit ball for five scoreless innings while teammate Patrick Walker staked him to a 1-0 lead with his sixth home run in the season off Toros starter and winner Jason Garcia (3-2) in the fourth inning.
The Toros got even in the sixth inning as Martin Conde walked, advanced to third on an error and scored as Houston Hernandez grounded into a double play. Hernandez drove in three of the Toros seven runs.
In the pivotal seventh, the Toros got to Montoya and reliever Michael Boes for five runs on four hits to take a 6-1 lead. CSUSB got two runs back in the home half of the seventh on Brad Croxton's two-run homer, his team-leading eighth of the season.
Gary Scott came on in relief of Garcia and blanked the Coyotes the rest of the way for his third save. The final Toros run came in the ninth on a solo home run by Kyle Stanley, his fifth of the season.
