Box Score
vs. Hawaii Pacific vs. Western Oregon
Carson, CA -- After scoring three runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to put away a pesky Hawaii Pacific squad, 7-4, in the Toros' first contest of the day, CSUDH left little doubt in the nightcap as Amy Thomas' (Barstow, CA/Barstow HS) arm and Pebbel Prestwood's (Hesperia, CA/Sultana HS/ CS Stanislaus) bat led the Toros to a 9-1 rout over Western Oregon on day two of the Togo's Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus. With the wins, CSUDH improves to 26-4 as cross-pool play concluded on Pedretti Field.
The Toros started quickly against HPU, scoring single runs in each of the first three innings on five total hits and a costly Sea Warrior miscue. After the two teams exchanged single runs in the 4th inning, HPU knotted the game at 4-4 one inning later on three hits and a Toro error, and had an opportunity to break the game open until Kristine Minter (Chula Vista, CA/Hampton University), in relief of starter Jackie Miller (Bremerton, WA/Central Kitsap HS/CS Stanislaus), fanned Anuhea Young on three straight pitches with the bases loaded.
The Toros would capitalize on that momentum in their 6th inning at-bat, using a Lori Moreno (Los Angeles, CA/California HS) 2RBI single and Prestwood RBI baseknock two batters later to cap the scoring as CSUDH would claim the 7-4 win. Cindy Perry-Brown (Victorville, CA/Silverado HS) led the Toros with three hits, three runs scored and three stolen bases while Moreno garnered run-scoring honors with three RBIs. In the circle, Minter picked up her 10th win in as many decisions, hurling three innings of stellar one-hit relief work.
In the nightcap, Prestwood connected for a 1st inning two-run homerun to right center to give CSUDH a 3-1 cushion, plating Kate Groden (San Pedro, CA/San Pedro HS/SE Missouri Univ.), who reached base on an error two batters earlier. That's where the score remained until the bottom of the 4th when the Toros capitalized on the second and final WOU error of the game, allowing Jen Wilson (Orange, CA/Bellflower HS/CS Fullerton) to cross home plate and give CSUDH a three-run cushion.
The Toros would put the game away one inning later as the scored five times on four hits to put an exclaimation point on the 9-1 win, the big blows courtesy of a Miller 2RBI base hit and an Elicia Velazquez (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel HS/Palomar JC) 2RBI double to account for the final runs of the game. Thomas was solid in picking up her 8th win of the season (8-2), fanning four and allowing four hits in the victory, including just two in the final four innings of work. Velazquez paced the Toros with two hits in the win as CSUDH racked up eight hits as a team.
The Toros conclude pool play tomorrow morning with a 9:15 a.m. match-up against Chaminade University, and then begin Championship Bracket Play in the afternoon, with both opponent and time to be announced.
