Carson, CA – Brittney Blankenship (Palmdale, CA/Palmdale HS) garnered game-high scoring and rebounding honors while recording her third double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds, as the Toros took a 56-33 blowout over Sonoma State. With the win the Toros extend their winning streak to four games and improve to 11-6, 6-5 CCAA. With the loss the Seawolves drop their third game in a row and fall to 8-10, 5-6 CCAA.
It took a while to get both teams to get going in the first half, as the Toros would be the first to put up points on the scoreboard at the 17:25 mark. Both teams would continue their offensive woes over the next few minutes, with neither team able to get into double digits through the first ten minutes of play.
CSUDH would begin to pull away using a 6-0 over a three-minute period to go up 21-11 with 4:18 remaining. Michelle Kribell (Buena Park, CA/Western HS) would start the run with a jumper off a pass from Brandi McGinest (Long Beach, CA/Kansas University), followed by a jumper and a pair of free throws by Blankenship.
The Toros would be held scoreless over the remaining four minutes, while Sonoma State would only be able to tack on a pair of three throws by Genny Anderson to cut the lead to eight at 21-13, where the score would remain as both teams headed into the locker room.
CSUDH would not waste time in the second half putting points on the board, starting the half on a 14-1 run to go up 35-14 at the 14:14 mark. Six different Toros would contribute points during the run, led by Tameka Blue (Watsonville, CA/Santa Cruz HS) and Aujanee Baldwin (Fontana, CA/Etiwanda HS) chipping in four points apiece.
The Toro lead would hover around 20 points over the next four minutes, before remaining above 20 for the rest of the game.
In the second half the Toro defense would hold the Seawovles to 21.9 percent shooting from the field, while shooting 50 percent themselves. The defense would also create 23 SSU turnovers, and win the battle on the boards with a 43 to 36 advantage.
Leading the Seawolves was Jessica Jennings and Anderson, each with nine points. Alex Howard would add an additional eight points off the bench.
In addition to Blankenship's 16 points, Kribell would record double figures in scoring for the first time this season, chipping in 10 points and eight rebounds. Alana Bailey (Altadena, CA/John Muir HS) and Blue would contribute nine and eight points, respectively. The CCAA's top marksman from beyond the arc, Jessica Liang (Alhambra, CA/Mark Keppel HS), would nail a three-point shot, extending her streak to 17 straight games.
The Toros continue action in the Torodome tomorrow as they take on the Gators of San Francisco State, with tip-off schedule for 5:30 pm.
