vs. So. Illinois University vs. Regis
Phoenix, AZ — Sophomore Amy Thomas' (Barstow, CA/Barstow HS) arm and senior Pebbel Prestwood's (Hesperia, CA/CS Stanislaus) bat combined for an 8-0 shutout over preseason No. 7-ranked Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in the early game of the Schutt Leadoff Classic Friday in Phoenix, AZ. But the productive offense CSUDH used to outscore its opponents 67-8 over the first nine games of the season was nowhere to be found in the nightcap as the Toros dropped a 2-0 decision to Regis as day two came to a close.
With the split, the Toros move to 9-1 on the season.
In the opener, Thomas was dominant, blanking the 7th-ranked Cougars by an 8-0 count. The Barstow native allowed just two hits in picking up her third win of the season (3-0), extending CSUDH's scoreless streak against opponents to 12 innings and counting. Thomas fanned four batters in the contest against just one walk, facing 21 batters in the 6-inning game, three over the minimum required for six innings of work.
Offensively, CSUDH used a Jackie Miller (Bremerton, WA/CS Stanislaus) 2RBI single and a Linda Reyes (Garden Grove, CA/St. John's) RBI double in the bottom of the 1st to account for an early 3-0 lead, and a 3rd inning Prestwood 3-run blast, which cleared two fences and traveled an estimated 275 feet, to push its lead to 6-0.
Three innings later, a Cindy Perry-Brown (Victorville, CA/Silverado HS) single brought home Araceli Martinez (Downey, CA/Warren HS) and Akemi Fleming (Long Beach, CA/Millikan HS), who both walked to begin the frame, and was followed by a Lori Moreno (Los Angeles, CA/California HS) RBI single which ended the game via the run-rule.
In the nightcap, the Toros garnered seven hits to Regis' two, but the Rangers capitalized on two CSUDH errors for the game's first run in the 4th, and enjoyed a leadoff home run in the 6th to put the icing on the 2-0 win.
Senior Miller fanned 10 Regis batters on the afternoon, including eight through the first 3.0 innings of work, but dropped her first decision of the year (4-1), despite three hits from Moreno and two by a resurgent Martinez.
The Toros now face UC San Diego tomorrow morning in an elimination game, with first pitch scheduled for 9:00 a.m. PST
