Box Score
Carson, CA - CSUDH was down early, but slowly chipped away at the UC San Diego lead behind two solo shots by Kyle Stanley (Buena Park, CA/Hawaii Pacific), including a 9th inning, two-out walk-off bomb over the center field fence to give the Toros their second win of the season, and their first over the Tritons after UCSD handed the Toros a loss just three days ago. With the win, CSUDH improves to 2-5, while UCSD drops to 3-2 on the season.
The Triton offense would get things going in a hurry of Toros starter Gus Hernandez (Lynwood, CA/Lynwood HS), scoring four runs in the first inning, courtesy of a three-run shot by Scott Clement, followed by a solo homerun down the left field line by Damian Fante.
The Toro offense would get on the scoreboard in the 2nd after a double down the right field line by Stanley and bunt single by Mateo Marquez (Biggs, CA/Cal State L.A.) to put runners on first and third. Martin Conde (Los Angeles, CA/Fremont HS) would ground out to the shorts stop to bring home Stanley, cutting the UCSD lead to 4-1.
Starter Hernandez would settle down, only allowing a pair of hits over the next four innings, putting the Tritons down in order in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th before being relieved in the 6th inning.
The Toros would take their next bite out of the UCSD lead in the 4th as Stanley connected for his first home run of the game, a solo blast over the wall in right center.
CSUDH would continue to chip away in the 5th after a one-out triple down the right field line by Isidro Perez (South Gate, CA/LA Harbor College). Jason Klug (Moreno Valley, CA/San Bernardino Valley College) would follow by hitting a ground ball that was booted by the second baseman, allowing Perez to score to bring the Toros to within one at 4-3.
The Tritons would respond and capitalize on a Toro throwing error that allowed Matt Lawson to reach second base after narrowly beating out ground ball to short. After a Toro pitching change, David Morehead would take advantage and bring home Lawson from second on a double to left field.
In the bottom of the 6th, the Toros would take their first lead of the game, scoring three runs to forge in front, 6-5. Fred Medina (Santa Ana, CA/Century HS) would single home the first Toro run while Houston Hernandez (La Miranda, CA/St. Paul HS) and Perez would both double home one run apiece to give CSUDH its first lead of the game.
CSUDH would add one more run in the seventh on a squeeze bunt by Conde, scoring Stanley from third to give the Toros a two-run lead at 7-5.
The Tritons would not go down quietly, however, and would score in the 8th and 9th frames to set the stage for Stanley.
After UCSD pitching would retire the first two Toro batters, Stanley sent the visitors home with a bomb over the center field wall to give the CSUDH the walk-off win.
UCSD starter T.C. Geach would last 4.2 innings, giving up three runs while striking out three. Reliever Trevor Decker would be credited with the loss, giving up one run on one hit, completing just 2/3 of an inning. Offensivley, Clement would record two hits and drive in four runs, while Morehead had four hits on the afternoon for the Tritons.
Toro starter Heranandez would last 5.0 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. Dustin Gober (Long Beach, CA/Compton College) would get the win in 1.2 innings on work, allowing one run on two hits.
Stanely would lead the CSUDH offense with three hits and two RBIs, including two homeruns and a double. Marquez would be 3-for-3 on the day, including a stolen base.
The Toros will next be in action tomorrow as they take on Cal Poly Pomona in a non-conference contest, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
