SAN BERNARDINO – Aaron Jimenez doubled in Brad Croxton with the winning run Friday night as Cal State San Bernardino defeated Cal State Dominguez 8-7 in a non-conference collegiate baseball game before 272 fans at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
The Coyotes' James Sinkes, who pitched 2.1 innings in relief of starter Doug Brandt, got the win with Rylan Hanks striking out two batters in the ninth to earn the save. CSUSB is now 1-1, while the Toros drop to 1-4.
Rego Nieto was the hitting star for the Coyotes with three hits and three runs batted in. Billy Ermert and Croxton each had a pair of hits to lead a 12-hit Coyote attack agianst four Toros pitchers.
Houston Hernandez had three hits for the Toros. Martin Conde had a pair of hits and an RBI. Chris Borchers, in relief of starter Jason Garcia took the loss.
The Coyotes had an early 5-0 lead before the Toros got to Brandt for two runs in the third and three in fourth. All three runs in the fourth were unearned thanks to two Coyotes errors.
In the early game Friday, Cal State L.A. beat the Tritons 14-9.
Play continues at San Bernardino Saturday among the four teams, with CSUDH facing UC San Diego at 3 p.m.
