October 25, 2006

Box Score

Carson, CA - The Toros could not stop the No.11-ranked UC San Diego Tritons from extending their winning streak to 12-straight games as UCSD swept CSUDH 30-14, 30-20, 30-22, out-hitting the Toros .363 to .018. With the loss the Toros drop to 8-15, 5-12 CCAA and UCSD improves to 20-2, 15-2 CCAA.

The Toros would keep pace with the Tritons early in game one until UCSD's Kristin Halvorsen stepped back to serve and rallied off seven consecutive points put the Tritons ahead 14-5.

Randi Johnson (Ranchos Palos Verdes, CA/Campbell University) would temporarily stop the bleeding with a kill off a dish from Kayleigh Spratt (Rhonert Park, CA/Rancho Cotate HS), but UCSD would take the next point on a kill by Rebecca Bailey and never look back.

The Toros would show a little more fight in game two, matching the No. 11-ranked Tritons point for point, knotting the game at 11-11 on a kill by senior Timary More (Torrance, CA/El Camino CC) .

UCSD would again step up its game, however, and leave the Toros behind.

In game three UCSD would quickly build a 10-point lead at 23-13 on a kill by Bailey. However, CSUDH would show that they had a little fight left in them by cutting the deficit in half at 27-22, before UCSD closed out the game and the match.

Bailey and Brianna Koche split match-high honors with 12 kills apiece, hitting .417 and .545, respectively. Libero Natalie Facchini picked up match-high honors with 14 digs, while setter Kristin Halvorsen just missed out on a double-double with 29 assists and nine digs.

For the Toros Sophia Lopes (Los Angeles, CA/Santa Monica CC) recorded seven kills while More and Courtney Spainhour (Redondo Beach, CA/El Camino CC) each chipped in six kills in the effort.

The Toros will next be in action on Friday, October 27, when they take on Cal State Monterey Bay in the 2006 home finale, with first serve scheduled for 7:00 pm in the Torodome. Join us as we say good-bye to five departing seniors in Timary More, Denise Herrera, Shannon Finley, Courtney Spainhour, Maria Miranda and Nicole Hoffman, as all will be concluding their two-year Toro careers.
