Carson, CA – The Toros' 36 to 14 free throw advantage proved too much for the visiting Otters as CSUDH ran away with a 76-50 women's basketball victory Friday night in the Torodome.
Cal State Dominguez Hills was led by Tameka Blue's (Watsonville, CA/Santa Cruz HS) game-high scoring with 18 points. With the win, Toros stretch their winning streak to three games, and improve to 10-6, 5-5 CCAA. With the loss, Cal State Monterey Bay drops its sixth-straight game and falls to 2-14, 1-8 CCAA.
CSUDH kept on rolling from Wednesday's 22-point win over Cal Poly Pomona jumping out to a 12-point lead at 19-7 after a three by Jessica Liang (Alhambra, CA/Mark Keppel HS) with 12:11 remaining. CSUDH would use a 12-4 run over the next four minutes to push its lead to 20 at 31-11.
As the Toros offense stayed hot, the defense would make its presence felt. Over the next four minutes of play the Toros would use four blocks, two of which came courtesy of Ree Browne (Torrance, CA/South Torrance HS), and two steals to keep the Otters off the scoreboard.
CSUMB would try to chip away at the lead after consecutive jumpers by Dana, but, Liang would hit her third three of the first half to push the lead back up to 20 points with three minutes remaining. The Toro offense would match all points by the visiting Otters, and go into the locker room with a 43-22 advantage.
In the first half the Otters would dominate the glass with a 35 to 19 rebounding advantage, including 20 to 5 on the offensive end. However, the Toros took advantage of their many trips to the charity stripe, converting on 19 free throws to the Otters' five.
The intermission would not cool down the CSUDH offense. The Toros would push their lead to 26 on a fast break layup by Blue in the first minute of play. Over the next 10 minutes, the teams would mostly trade baskets, with the Toros maintaining a 20-plus point lead.
Danielle Rogers (Rosemead, CA/Nogales HS) and Teriana Loftin (Torrance, CA/West HS) would come off the bench and add offense, while being tough on the Otters post players and not allowing any drop off.
CSUDH's lead would reach a high of 30 at 73-43 after a pair of free throws by Brandi McGinest (Long Beach, CA/Kansas University) at the 4:14 mark. CSUDH would coast the remaining four minutes, and finish up their second straight blow-out, winning 76-50.
CSUMB was led by a trio of players with seven points, Natalie Franka, Dana Andrews, and Denisha Profit, with the latter also garnering game-high rebounding honors with 10 boards.
In addition to Blue's 18 points, Brittney Blankenship (Palmdale, CA/Palmdale HS) would come up one rebound shy of her third double-double of the season, recording 15 points and nine rebounds. Liang would also be in double figures with 11 points, including three makes from beyond the arc.
The Toros continue their conference homestand next Friday as they take on the Seawolves of Sonoma State, then the Gators of San Francisco State on Saturday, with both games scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in the Torodome.
