UCSD Volleyball Team Defeats Toros

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 10th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team swept Cal State Dominguez Hills 30-16, 30-18, 30-25 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match on Friday night. With the win, the Tritons improve to 13-2, 5-1 CCAA while the Toros drop to 4-8, 1-6 CCAA.

In game one leading 7-4, the Tritons scored four consecutive points on three CSUDH errors and an Amber Ries kill to go ahead 11-4. Leading 15-11, the Tritons put together another run with five straight points, the last four on Courtney aces and a Brianna Koche kill, 20-11. UCSD led comfortably the rest of the game. Rebecca Bailey served the last four points of the game as CSUDH hurt themselves with three attack errors to end the game at 30-16 UCSD.

In game two, the Tritons scored six of the first seven points, the last on kills by Kimberly Carpenter and a Kristin Halvorsen dump ball. Later, Courtney put down back-to-back kills to give the Tritons the 20-8 advantage. Koche put game two away at 30-18.

Game three was the closest of the night as the Tritons again jumped out to an early lead at 10-4. This time, CSUDH came back to cut it down to 12-10. Courtney quickly responed with a kill of her own and Koche sent down a kill to extend the Triton lead to 14-10. CSUDH would cut the lead to three points on several occasions, the last at 23-20. UCSD gained control of the game by scoring the next four points, three of which came on kills by Bailey. The 27-20 lead was enough as the Tritons closed out the game and match, 30-25.

Nicole Courtney led all players with 10 kills, as the Tritons had 10 different players record at least one kill. Laura Watkins had 11 digs and Natalie Facchini added 10 digs. The Tritons had 11 aces, four by Courtney. UCSD hit .200 while CSUDH hit -.010.

In addition to Courtney's 10 kills, Bailey and Carpenter tallied seven apiece and Koche added six. Halvorsen had 19 assists in the first two games while Kim Adams set the third game and tallied 15 assists. Bailey also led the team with six block assists.

The Toros return to the court Saturday night when they travel to San Bernardino to take on the Coyotes. CSUSB, the No. 2 team in the country is coming off a three-game loss to Cal Poly Pomona Friday night at home.
