CSUDH Starts Strong But Fall to Sonoma State, 3-1, in CCAA Volleyball

Carson, CA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills junior Timary More led the Toro charge with 13 kills, but the visiting Seawolves came back after dropping game one, 25-30, to win the next three 30-25, 30-19, 30-18. With the loss, CSUDH drops to 3-7, 0-5 CCAA, while SSU picked up their first conference win of the year and improves to 6-7, 1-4 CCAA.

The Toros started quickly in game one, capitalizing on five service errors by the Seawolves to capture a 9-6 lead. Both teams would battle and trade points with the Toros never able to increase their lead past three. A kill by Sonoma's Rikki Lee Buckshnis brought them within one at 14-13, and was followed by three straight errors by the Toros to give Sonoma its first lead of the game at 16-14. The Toros would quickly recover and tie the game at 17-17 on a block by Ashley Lawler and Nicole Hoffman. From that point on the Seawolves would never get closer than two points, and the Toros finished game one with a 30-25 victory.

Game two was a continuation of game one, with both teams fighting back and forth to an 11-11 tie. Sonoma took the lead on a service ace by Kendall Leatherberry and built a 15-11 lead. The Toros would fight back with back to back service aces by Maria Serrano to cut the led to two at 20-18. Sonoma would again build a small lead but the Toros would once again would make a come back on a kill and a block by Hoffman to knot the game at 25. However, errors would plague the Toros over the next few plays and Sonoma picked up the game two win, 30-25.

Games three and four were controlled by the Seawolves as they posted .205 and .316 hitting percentages to the Toros' .024 and -.045. In each game Sonoma State jumped to a large early lead, which the Toros could never recover from. The only offense for the Toros in the last two games were provided by More and Kristin Sosa who had nine and five kills respectively.

On defense the Toros were led by Sylvia Bonilla with a game high 18 digs and Hoffman with four blocks.

Offensively for Sonoma they were led by Mindy Orth with 13 kills and 11 digs, and Lindsay Webb with a game high 15 kills and 5 blocks.

The Toros continue CCAA action tomorrow afternoon as they host Cal State Monterey Bay for a 3:00 p.m. scheduled first serve in the Torodome.
