Carson, CA -- Visiting UC San Diego, ranked 20th in this week's NSCAA/adidas poll, played with both conviction and urgency as they took a 2-0 women's soccer decision over the 12th-ranked Toros Wednesday afternoon at Toro Stadium. Ending a two-match losing streak against CSUDH dating back to last season, the Tritons improve to 6-1-1, 2-1-0 CCAA while the Toros fall to 5-2-1, 1-1-1 CCAA.
UCSD's Kelly Mayo notched her first goal of the season just 4:18 into the contest, taking a cross from Alise Malley and beating Toro goalkeep Lisa Agramonte (Lakewood, CA/Mayfair HS) to the near post for a quick 1-0 lead. Seemingly shellshocked, the Toros managed only five shots in the first 45 minutes, with most coming from long range.
After intermission, the Tritons again came out with aggression, increasing their lead to 2-0 at the 48:00 mark. UCSD junior Megan Dickey, who entered today's contest as the league leader in points, was “Megan” on the spot, taking a rebound off a blocked shot and beating Agramonte for her 8th goal of the season. The Toros, who seemed a step slow all afternoon, put together valiant attempts at a comeback, but failed to put pressure on Triton goalie Mia Shirley, who was bolstered by her team's swarming defense.
Agramonte notched two saves in the loss, while Shirley made seven saves in the Triton win. Offensive aggressors, the Tritons outshot the Toros 15-13, but were out-corner kicked by a 6-4 margin.
CSUDH is back in conference action on Saturday, September 24, battling Cal State San Bernardino for a 12:30 p.m. scheduled first kick.
