Carson, CA -- Senior Francisco Corona's (Paramount, CA/LA Harbor JC) second goal of the year gave the Toros a 1-0 lead with just over 18 minutes elapsed in the first half, but visiting UC San Diego's Jon Krupansky scored the equalizer 1:30 into the second period as the two teams played to a 1-1 tie after two overtimes. With the tie, CSUDH moves to 5-1-1, 1-1-1 CCAA while UCSD now stands at 4-1-1, 1-1-1 CCAA.
The Toros and Tritons played evenly in the first frame, with neither side giving an inch. In the game's 18th minute, however, the speedy Corona was the beneficiary of a turnover, and was fouled inside the box after collecting the loose ball.
Capitalizing on his penalty kick opportunity, Corona tapped the ball to the far post, as Triton goalie Edward Ruhland guess incorrectly, diving to his right for naught.
After intermission, UCSD capitalized on an early opportunity as Krupansky sailed up the left sideline after taking a pass from Dustin Tannenhaus, and lofted his shot just over the outstretch arms of CSUDH goalkeep Kyle Polak (Huntington Beach, CA/CS Fullerton), knotting the contest at 1-1.
The Toros had a golden opportunity in the 65th minute to regain the lead as sophomore Sammy Rivas (Long Beach, CA/CS Fullerton) and Nick Rippeto (Garden Grove, CA/Pacifica HS) teamed up for a two-on-one fast break. After Rivas had his initial shot blocked by a Triton defender 10 yards from the goal, he collected the rebound and found Rippeto, who quickly returned the pass to Rivas' feet, who blasted it by Ruhland. The effort was called back, however, as the Toros were called offsides, negating a momentum-changing exchange.
The two teams played two extra frames, with neither capitalizing on the either team's stingy defense.
The Toros outshot UCSD 17-10 while Polak made three saves in goal compared to Ruhland's eight.
CSUDH is back in conference action on Saturday, September 24, battling Cal State San Bernardino for a 3:00 p.m. scheduled first kick.
